Even if you had to unbolt one of the side rails and cut some cross braces that would be less expensive. Get it apart clean it up and put it back together.
I just priced some of that stuff. Used 5th wheel with slider: $750'00. Buying a used 5th wheel you already have.
A new one close to $3,000.
Lots of work can come with both of those unless you find one that matches yours which is a? Simplex?

Okay, they were able to save my 5th wheel, using a torch no less. Going to put a new muffler on, because if i am going to haul reefer, i don't want the exhaust going into the air intake, contaminating the contents of the trailer, and going to see about upgrading to self-adjusting slack adjusters.
When its done, I will post a pic. Not much different than the one you see on my profile, save for new marker lights on the cab, and Alcoa rims with new virgins.
I do have an engine question though.
Sticking with Cummins (because that's what's in it right now), what mechanical engine would be a good fit? Right now it's a 300. Were I to take it across 80 in PA, i'd be lugging up some of those hills, dropping to about 20mph, if I am fully loaded, and at 80k. Don't want to do that. Not looking for a twin turbo 750hp Detroit Diesel, but does Cummins make a 400 or 450 that would work in the cabover? -
I believe that is an NTC. Many of those came from the factory at 400HP.
Some early model N14's were mechanical. That would be an easy swap but probably need a charge air cooler. That would be challenging.SmallPackage Thanks this. -
Alright, time for another update (for those who are interested/care).
Got their 5th wheel on my rails, and welding it back onto the frame. The owner of the company took a look and mentioned it needs some new water lines, and the belt for the water pump was coming apart (mechanic mentioned that a while back, just didn't get to it).
Automatic slack adjusters put on the drives, and will put them on the steers after a month or two of running.
Also, will upgrade to Alcoa rims on the drives, with virgin rubber. They said 2 of the drives were recaps, but all the rest were virgins (too old to recap if needed), but looked reliable enough for a few months of running.
I am hoping it'll be done in the next 2 weeks or so.rolls canardly, Flint1, BoxCarKidd and 4 others Thank this. -
I wish you the best of luck and will keep watching as the progress continues.SmallPackage Thanks this. -
I ordered, and received the Kroil Oil, but forgot to take it with me, and the one mechanic said it's the best. Also, forgot to mention, when I said
SmallPackage and 650cat425 Thank this. -

Cummins had a 400 horsepower version of that engine
The 300 horsepower engine that you have is identical to the 400. Your engine easily could be rebuilt to a 400.
If you are interested I can give you more information.
If it were me I would not mess around with used engines. Those engines now are coming out of old old trucks and even if they sound okay it's anyone's guess how much time is on it or what's what. I would buy a brand new mechanical n14 right from Cummins.
But like I said you have a very very very special engine. The inframe kit for that engine is only around $1,000.
$1,000 on a caterpillar will buy you a few Nuts and Bolts... washers will be an additional cost...
And if you really want to get across those mountains a 13-speed should be on your list.
If you decide to sell that engine let me know I may be interested.rolls canardly, SmallPackage and 650cat425 Thank this. -
Another thought is that if you're seriously willing to replace the engine you could have someone turn the engine up.
There are different ways to do that some ways are worse on the engine than others...
For example mine is a 350 big cam and mine is turned up 10%. It pulls great. I have no problems in the mountains but a 13-speed would definitely be on the agenda before more horsepower.
If you could get to 350 or so with a 13 speed it might surprise you
And if you end up having engine problems you're willing to replace the engine anyway.
Just something to think about.650cat425 and SmallPackage Thank this. -
I have yet to test it out, but the main reason I am considering putting a bigger engine in it is according to Volvo, this is classified as a "medium duty" engine, and a few other drivers have mentioned if I take it across 80 in PA that I'll be lugging up some of those hills at 15-20mph
I'm not worried so much about speed as I am the torque for being able to get up those mountains without dropping to 5th gear, and staying there for an extended length of time.650cat425 Thanks this.
