The 72/74 meter blades are heavy and require a 4 axle truck to get legal. The reason being they are very heavy to the front, the dog of the blade is at like 80’. I am 17k on the steer and 56-57k on the drives. I am probably only 52k on the trailer. Guys do it with under spec’d trucks and have issues with both breakdowns and also with ride height/ground clearance.

the only way to learn this is by doing it with a good crew - the other 2 trucks plus your steerman. It works better with guys that have oversize experience just because there is a lot going on when loaded. A good attitude goes along way as well - which I know you have. Ask yourself this question, am I comfortable averaging less than 40 miles per hour all the time....

As @Tug Toy said, just plan on replacing everything except the cab / frame from the get go. I replaced ever moving piece of the brakes in mine, U joints, seals, rubber brake hoses, all the air bags, air bag mounts, leveling valve, brake valve, both U joints in the steering shaft, and then eventually a new steering box. And I even bought a new core for the radiator......

I've debating if I should answer this, cause I feel like your picking on ol Buck. With that said, only I can poke fun at ol Buck..

Point being, lots of freight ~30k lb & under moves for good money. Do I miss out on the heavy stuff.? Yeah, the heavy stuff that pays good. Just because it heavy, does not always mean it pays good. So, I'm not missing out if it don't pay good..

That binder on deck only paid $4.16 a mile..

This 20' & 4 tricon's only paid out $13.11 per mile & dropped 75yards from the home 20.. Then again, the devil came out to play & he coaxed the extra cash on that one.. :D

What the hell are you gonna do with a single axle truck.? Beats me. I'm making a living, own everything out right, except $76k left on the homestead.. At 3 years younger than you I might add..

Despite all the holdups and obstacles, it sounds as if you are enjoying that gig. With the trailer that you have, do you need a forklift at all for setup?
