And there are a host of other exercises not dealing with the legs, but support all that weight for the squat.
-farmer's carry (I like em for heavy cardio, grip strength, self discipline and build the traps. It prepares the lungs to be able to breathe while lifting heavy)
-deadlift (2nd best exercise to the squat itself)
-shoulder shrugs
-any and all core exercises
-leg press (I had a 115 lb girl up to pressing 1000lbs.)
-power cleans
If you are trying to set a new PR on squats, overall physically and mentally, you must be feeling awesome. I used to ask my guys in the gym this question when they wanted to downplay their accomplishments to mine and say that they can't lift as heavy as I could:
Q. How do you know when you're lifting heavy weight?
A. If you drop that weight and it has a good chance of instantly killing you, it is heavy.
I always preferred the free weights. No machines. You want to build that balance that lifting free weights require. Also, you've probably noticed that your stabilizer muscles will fail before your strength fails. A good spotter will see this and will help you to STABILIZE the weights so that you can continue until the strength fails.
Lots of people in the gym believe that it takes a long time to reach those fitness goals. It takes a short time when done correctly. 2, maybe 3 months. And that feeling...singlescrewshaker, G13Tomcat, jamespmack and 3 others Thank this. -
