Sounds as if all you need is that 1 guy to run with you to blow the roof off the place.

I am going to say something to you and it will probably sound geeky and nerdy, but from what everything I've seen, it's the absolute truth. Have you ever heard of the Rule of Two? The majority has the crab mentality. This is what causes guys to walk around with chips on their shoulders and to become haters. No one wants you to get ahead and so they try to hold you back. The best way to break free from the crab mentality is the Rule of Two.

I walked into this gym for the first time and there were your typical new guy losers that no one wanted to help. Wimpy, didn't know what they were doing. There were the guys who had been in the gym for a bit, been doing those stupid generic workouts, think their hot stuff, make lots of noise, drinking water out a little gallon gas can, trying to look like MMA fighters. Those guys, you know the types. There was that one big guy, stronger than anyone else in the gym by far, but would be out of breath just by walking to the water fountain. Everyone but the new guys think they are the alpha. I personally think that alpha stuff is stupid. I loaded 405 on a bar for a bench and everyone in the vicinity went to the other side of the gym.

I found my second amid a group of Asian kids that came into the gym. He was the oldest and strongest Asian, but none of them knew a thing about the iron. I showed them some things, spotting them, working out with the group, yelling at them when they wanted to quit. It was 5 in the group. The next day, there were only 2. The next day, only 1. That's my guy. His name was No.

No was 10 years younger than me. He wanted it. The harder the workout, the harder he tried. No went from benching his own 155 lb bodyweight to cranking 315 lbs, contest style in 2 months, while his bodyweight went from 155 to 165. 10 lb weight gain, but doubled his strength. Because we were open to the new guys, every time a group of young guys come in together, we would help them. Spot them, show them what to do, push them a little bit. Just like no's group, by the end of the week, there was only 1 left. So, this guy would fall in to our group.

There were plenty girls in the gym. They'd come in their groups (remember that thing I told you about the Duck Pond? We'd pull the swans out of every group) Girls have that 'forbidden fruit' thing going. If you are interested in them, they are not interested in you, HOWEVER if you had no interest in them, they'd drink your bath water. Remember how I talked about mentally emptying them room? If you can do this, you definitely have no interest in the girls. Anyways, I'd use the girls in the gym, especially when doing pullups. My guys had to be able to do a pullup with a girl holding on to his neck. Those young guys would go ALL OUT when doing pullups so as not to hurt that girl's feelings. Some of the girls wanted their arses kicked and so we brought the girls in the group. After we got our workout in, my best guys had to take one of the girls and kick her arse around the gym.

No was so well trained that if something happened and I wasn't there, everything carried on. Of course, the more successful you are, the more haters you will have. Mine came in the form of the personal trainers in the gym. They were complaining that I was hurting their business. They accused me of being a personal trainer. Of course, the management started breathing down my neck. If you and I are working out together, doing the same workouts, and I start yelling at you not to give up on me, am I a personal trainer or am I your workout partner? You spot me, you yell at me, I spot you, I yell at you. We, you and I, are workout partners. Right? So what I did with the management was demand that they showed me in the gym contract that I signed the part where I agree not to be a workout partner. Or spot anyone. If you just want me out of the gym, I need all the money I paid in back. And my crew does also. It will take a lawyer no time at all to point out to you your mistake and when that happens, we all want our money back and we will go elsewhere. The management offered me a job as a trainer and gave me a free membership.

Of course, they weren't done. They started demanding that we be completely quiet during deadlifting. Okay people, lets look at the contract again. This was, of course, in the days before Planet Fitness and their Lunk Alarm.

Apparently, Planet Fitness has done their homework.

I totally see what you're saying. I don't buy into that alpha/beta stuff either. I'm going in there to challenge myself, for me, not anyone else.

First time I loaded 2 plates and a 10 on the bar in the squat rack I could see the "alpha" boys, the ones that stick to working the waist up, watching in the mirrors. They wanted to see me fail. When I went parallel and back up for 3 reps you could just tell they were pissed.

I've already caught a few chicks staring at me in the mirrors. Kinda weird because literally no women have ever checked me out in the past.

You know how I mentioned mentally emptying out the room to where only you and that iron loaded with your PR exist? Take it a step further. Remove the iron. There is only you. Change the things that you don't like about yourself or wish that you could improve. If you can empty the room, you can do this too. Instantly. Like setting an alarm clock. In order to truly be strong, you must be strong all over. No weaknesses. Remove the weaknesses. For me, it was a foul temper and impatience and an inability to listen. If someone can piss you off, they can control you. That is weakness. If you have buttons to push, people will push them. Remove all the buttons and trigger points.

That iron teaches you self discipline. Once you learn/master self discipline, you can remove both physical and mental limitations. To test yourself out, take up a new hobby. Take up learning and education. You will excel at EVERYTHING you apply yourself at.
