Never seen tandem flatbeds until today. I am curious what the purpose is... can anyone enlighten me?

As for their purpose; same as any other... haul more freight. Lots of crane moves. They're very popular hauling lumber.
The second last one is what happens when you put 90,000 lbs of counterweight on half a b-train on a sand sub-base.
The last one is the worst POS trailer I've ever hauled... popular with hay haulers.

We have a supplier that pulls double 48 flatbeds on the Indiana Toll road/Ohio Turnpike, from the Youngstown Ohio area, to Elkhart Indiana. Driver pulls them across, then delivers off both, one at a time.
Truckermania and CousinVinny Thank this. -
Ahh cool, I do believe these guys were going to be heading into Canada so it must be a thing there. I'm used to seeing all sorts of multi axle combinations but nope, never seen wiggle flatbeds!

This was Dads setup new in 1988 in Ohio. A-trains. You could dock both trailers for tow motor load. But the big reason was to double out of a steel mill.
Get two, or four manifests and take each trailer in separate. Two coils on the first trailer, and leave. Then load 2 coils on the second. Go down the street and hook them up for a midnight ride. They are very popular in Oh,Pa,Mi,In,Ky. But mostly Btrains with every kind of axle configuration you can imagine.kylefitzy, Brettj3876, singlescrewshaker and 9 others Thank this. -
