It certainly does. Thank you. I will look into it at once. Do you know offhand if they offer weekend classes?

Great! Please let me know how things go for you!

They are in Florida and I am in Oregon. That is a real handicap when it comes to schools as well as companies I'm finding

Most of the big companies will reimburse you for your cost of school. A little bit every month you work for them. Ask the recruiter and they will tell you how it works.

Did you go to a company school by chance? Also, I wonder about going to a C/S and then my location/homebase being Oregon. I am thinking if I went to Swifts school in Lewiston Idaho for example. How does that work? I mean if I work for Swift and they are in Lewiston, do I take "my company truck" home to Oregon and drive from my homebase?
Thanks so much, denise

Denise,
You will get tons of opinions here, and thats why this site is so valuable...but I would stay away from company schools and just go find a local technical college, and pay your own way. If you go to any company school, swift, werner, crst, ffe.......you will end up owning them several thousand dollars for the training if you leave before the specified date, sometimes 1 year of service and I saw in another post some places are up 2 years. Just find a technical school and pay your own way, that way you are a "free agent" and can leave a company with out the fear of having to pay $6000 for and education you could have paid $1500 out of pocket for....plus most companies will reimburse you for that money you paid out of pocket for school, so much a month, as long as you work for them.
I will do some research and find you a school in Oregon. With all the federal funds that were available in the late 90's for state vocational schools that started a trucking driving program , there has to be one close to you somewhere. Most states have what is called a "State Vocational School Board" they set the standards and approve programs at all state funded technical schools, usually all the schools will have the same name and differ only by where they are located. Most job service programs will steer you toward a state funded school.
P.S. Here is an update - This a state school in Oregon PTDI School "Rogue Community College" Table Rock Campus, White City Oregon It looks like the total cost for state residents is $2600 , you need to call them and see if they service work force development programs (you might not have to pay anything out of pocket.....make sure you wear your holey jeans, and a long face). (541) 956-7501.....best part is this school was in your back yard the whole time, it looks to be about 7 or 8 miles down the road from your home base, so you can save money on lodging and travel and just stay in your own home.Last edited: Sep 28, 2009
