Your main concern is ch 19. Leave it the way it is.

Ground plain is basically the metal under the antenna..
What you have there is basiclly the same as attaching an ant on a wall grab rail..Not the greatest place but it will do..
As long as you can get 5-10 mi with it as is i would leave it alone..

Well, I may wind up with it on the mirror anyway. The antenna fell off the other day, fortunately it landed on the cat walk and I didn't lose it. The only thing I can figure is it wobbles and must have unscrewed itself. I know everything was tight.

    May affect his ground..

Never had a need for lock tight on any of my ant related parts..If anything put a smutch of dieletic grease on it but that doesnt solve his issue..

Unfortunately the OP seems to be stuck on mounting his antenna behind the cab. Way easier to use a proper mount, IMHO, on the driver's door.

I just wanted to try something different, especially knowing how difficult it is to replace an antenna on a Volvo mirror mount. I'm not sold on the bird perch mount and having the coax exposed, but I might go with it anyways.

    Why?

The coax doesn’t go bad being exposed unless it is punctuated.

    I think you meant punctured.:p
Basically I feel it looks sloppy.
I've been looking at it and I think I can get it to look tidy, by using some cable ties.
