well i was with prime back in 2002, great company up front, came to orientation as a student driver with a expired drivers license.. prime got me a Missouri dvl so i could obtain my permit and eventully obtain my cdl and thin a required Hazmat... went threw training making .18 a mile taking home maked 300 bucks a week.. ran with my trainers (two)..(first didn't work out)..but ran wbour 4500 to 5500 a wk OTR...and after about 3 month of training got ready to advance and take my roud test failed the first time and it was friday and i was so tired frome runing all that week so i stayed in a hotel over the weekend to take it again... prime didnt force me or rush me to take it again just some days til i was ready.. the reason i failed is because my trainer never use 53ft trailer.. just 48ft... and that is a big differents if the tandems ar all the way to the back and when i was takin the road test to wasnt told i can put the tadems anywhere i wanted to... but on the next try i past...i was offered to lease but at the time prime was purchasing rocor... and offered me a company position making 32 cent a mile... made good money..didnt get to pick freight cause i was not a L/O but i had a real cool dispatcher that gave offers and what not.. and basically when i did what was asked he would reward me... hometime, preplans, miles.. but when he left i did... that is my story... prime is a great company for who shall pick... mines was being company with a great dispatcher...i would never lease...pointless... highway robbery... but company was great back than... i cant speak for know...

Covenant Transport has a VERY bad reputation among MOST drivers and it is suggested NOT to work for them and especially not to be trained by them! They have such an enormous turnover that this is what they almost have to do to keep making any money.

Eagle Motor Lines | Southern Cal [Birmingham, AL]

Drivers have stated that Southern Cal Transport makes drivers falsify logs and violate hours of service rules. These drivers have also reported them to the DOT who have apparently done nothing. Drivers state that they DO have them recorded on tape telling them to run illegal. Driver was then FIRED because the boss caught him recording the illegal directives.

I do not know what is going on at Swift but many drivers say they have cheated them, ran shoddy equipment, blatantly told drivers to lie on logs, not reimbursed tolls, etc. Recently Swift has turned their trucks up to 65 mph to try and plug the hemorrhage of drivers leaving the company. Beware of dealing with this company. You are forewarned.

I have seen this company literally run drivers into the ground! They consistently keep a bad reputation among drivers. A common joke when hearing of a trucker in the ditch is, "was it a Prime?". The state of Wyoming is considered the "Prime truck burial ground" as so many of their trucks have been inserted into the ditch there. I suggest you think HARD before going to Prime Inc of Springfield, MO.

Prime does not advertise lease to own FYI, they are 3 year leases,

Your Fixed Costs at prime are close to $1300 which comes out before You make any money at all. so lets add it up.

Fixed Costs (Average may vary) $1300
Fuel per Week based on 3000 Miles # 6.5 MPG = $1100

Ok so before you make any money for the week you have to pay out $2400
this does not include the Maintenence and tire fund deductions, etc, etc.

You can make money technically but it will probably be the same average as to what a company driver makes a week take home. as a lease operator if you want to go home every week you will fail, if you do not want to run your *** off you will fail.
if you do not kiss your dispatchers rear end you will fail.

the main problem with prime is that in this economy they pay percentage of the revenue of the load, they do not tell you what the load actually is paying, you have to take their word for it, YOU pay for the reefer fuel, if the trailer is damaged and you do not document it before hand they will charge you.

You are asking for advice from total strangers who could be completely insane.
But please believe me when I say this.
Stay as far away from PRIME as possible.

The lease to own is a total scam that will leave you without a truck and without any money.
Do not believe anybody that promises to make you an owner-operator.
Do you think they are in business to help you?
They are in business to make a profit.

If you think you want to own a truck one day, save up your money and buy one. But please don't think some company wants to give you one.

just another scab outfit...sure prime will lease ya a truck..they get 3.00 pm in the flatbed divison..and pay you 90cp plus f/c...you end up making about 20cpm in you pocket..pay all the bills and repairs etc etc..and they take 1.90 cpm and laugh all the way to the bank..lol.lol.lol..and this goes for all these super mega carriers

My Bios:
My history goes like this.

I was in the electric industry in one form or other for 25 years, of that milltary years 16. My passion was to assend to a Field Engineering Postion and travel the world. Feel that dream has long passed. For now, I am 52 years old and to crank it up one more time would be impossible.
Have done thinks only most people can dream about, but for the last twelve years I have dedicated my life as a single parent raising three kids, it has been only a dream.

In 1997 was when I first got the ich to go out on the road as a truck driver. Now I can really focus on this as a reality, because the last of my childern has grown up and left home.

My ex-wife left the childern and I 13 years ago to persue her own deams, hope she is happy.

Now it is my turn. Have looked at all the possibles and have desided to start from scatch. Even though I drove school bus for 8 years and drove every military vehicle built and have been driving with a buddy of mine once in a while in his rig over the last 12 years, I am still considered an inexperienced driver. So be it.

Would like to go out as an O/O, but given the state of things do not think that would be good idea. Believe I have a business sense, but not a trucking business sense. May be able to get enough in one year, but will deside that after one year.

One way or another to start desided to go with one of those companies that offer training. I do have my CDL's. I wanted to go with Schnieder or JB Hunt, but at this time are not taking on newbies.

I have applied to three companies already. Just to see if I could get a bite. Sure enough all three came in. Driver Solutions, CR England and HO Wolding. It appears to sign up with any one of those companies would really drain my pocket before I would get my own rig as a company driver, if that would even happen. Prime Inc looks very promising, especially the option of staying a student driver after finishing training. They seem to have the best wages. The website states $600.00 while on the road as student driver or $.12 a mile which ever is higher. One day off per week on the road. Have not found out how much tuition is yet or what is payed for while in school.

My time line goes like this; to be in school in October or November, do student driver training through the months of low trucking activity, then run solo when the economy starts looking up. Then maybe after a year go O/O.

Everything will either be given away, sold or put in storage. I do not care how long will be out on the road before I get a day off, because all that time would be used to build my retirement home. A self- sestaining efficent home. That is why I like Prime Inc.. Be on the road 6 months then take a month off to work on the house.

Any constructive ideas would be welcome. Any information on this types of companies and I would be grateful.

Information needed:

Amount for tuition
If lodging is payed by company
Do I need to be hired by a company before school
Does a company pay for being in school, if so how much
What is the pay as student driver.
How long is school
How long is student driver training
Benifits
Can days off be takin in a lump sum

actually, you are the first person who is a "newbie" who sounds like you have a brain. the length of "schools" differ as does the criteria and cost. i will give you sharp advise you should heed. if you can pay for the school out of pocket, or get a grant or loan for, you will be better off. if the school pays your way, the first thing you had better know is, THAT COMPANY HAS SOME SORT OF FINANCIAL ARRAINGEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL! maybe a kickback scheme, or some company outright owns the school.

next, and PAY ATTENTION, if you get fired or quit, or get sick, that company will sue you....and win. they own your ##### until you pay back every nickle, and you will do as you are told, and get just about every rotten load they can throw at you until the debt is paid. for prime (sued by o.o.i.d.a. for ripping off owner operators, and prime lost), they are a scumbag bunch of garbage haulers. you better like loading and unloading the freight, and sitting for long periods of time (which you will not be paid for) at grocery warehouses.
c.r. england was at one time, a premier hauler and first class operation as was werner. both now need to be shut down for being so very unsafe, and will hire about any creep that can slither thru the door.
next time you are near a truckstop, look and see all the banged up werner stuff. it's like that due to poor hiring practices, and putting moving freight ahead of maintaining equipment, and hiring quality people.

i don't know anything about driviers solutions, other than they constantly run ads (a red flag).

check with schneider. in the old days, they were a #### company, but have done much to improve. j.b. as well. i suggest roehl, and others that have a better reputation. the ones you mentioned, in my opinion, are ####.
