pullingtrucker, thank you for the reply. I am interested in the mods that you are talking about. So far I have heard about the ECM re-flashing and removing of the mufflers. My concern is noise... I love the sound of straight stacks but I am a little worried about spending hours on end with it. The last thing I want to do is have to wear earplugs. I drove a day cab that was so loud (turbo) that my ears would ring after driving it... I am hopeful the newer trucks are better... but this is still a concern.

Also I see you have the FASS the system. How do you like it? The are also just down the road from me. Does it truly improve your mileage and HP like it advertises?

For the exhuast go with a high flow muffler like the kind Pittsburgh Power (Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh) and others carry. This muffler is pretty much a Donaldson unit that has been rebadged. I can't remember the part number, but someone may chime in before I find it again. Straight pipes are nice for a while, but do get very load and some states don't like them. Also the high flow muffler will give you the stock look and just a tad bit more noise.

The FASS does work very well at removing the water (the main reason I went this way...lost 2 injectors from water) and keeping the HP/TQ consistant throughout the day. I really can't tell ya if it adds any HP/TQ since the small amount it would add wouldn't be detectable from the seat of your pants. I gained about .3 mpg with the system and wouldn't trade it.

The biggest gains will come from ECM tuning through either a Bully Dog downloader or a PDI tuned ECM. Both of these options will get the timing advanced and a better fuel curve to help improve MPG, HP/TQ, and even engine life. Talk to Mr Haney if you want to get a tuned ECM done...he is very very knowledgeable and has more expereince with the ECMs than most people I know.

Muffler info. Donaldson M100463 direct replacement for standard muffler. will not fit
W900, IH or 387 Pete.( fact muff on 387 is much longer than standard. will work if you replace stacks )

    pullingtrucker and Turn3 Thank this.

Mines an 03 MBN. I ran straight pipes with 3 foot long 7" Bull Hauler stacks for 4 days and had to put muffers back on it. We have to keep the stacks just bearley above the sleeper and the noise drove me insane and I have had every truck (pickup and Class 8 alike) straight piped and loved it but never had one this loud. Heck I was louder than even the DD60s I've drove and I like loud pipes but never had one this loud. I have some 26" long straight thru muffers on it now that made it much better but still is much louder the the other muffers that were on it but they were not stock either. Still thinking about the ECM reprogram but just not sure about the $ yet. Not looking for a race truck like some of the guys just a little stronger and less hungry of one.

As far as MPG running half of the miles empty and other half loaded with a 10spd 3.70 ratio tall rubber 500/1650 power 55MPH@ 1250RPM. T-800 mid-rise 62" sleeper with a smooth side 40' Timpte Hopper Bottem with recaps:( # 85K+/- GVW I was getting 6.5 MPG running a mix of 55 to 65 MPH speed limits. I didn't think that was too bad. Our coal bucket only yeilds us 5.5 MPG but it sits higher and a lot farther back behind the sleeper and I think thats what really hurts the MPG when pulling it. Plus the sides are not smooth just like most of them are not.
Thats my milage report anyway. Hope it helps

Truck Farmer thanks for the reply... that is exactly what I am worried about. I have a copy of the ECM report and it did not have a MPG readout but it does give the total miles and fuel used. It came out to be 5.7MPG. I do not know if I want to bet house in this number... has only else ever compared their math against the ECM's?

Great information... I'll be sure to keep this.

pullingtrucker thanks for the detailed reply! If the deal works out I am not going to try and turn this truck into a monster. A couple more ft/lbs of torque and horses pulling and that would be just fine. I am talking to Mr. Haney now and hopefully he'll be able to help when the time comes.

Again everyone... thanks for taking the time to help a FNG to the forum!

Most times the actual tank mileage will be lower than what the ECM is showing. I find that it averages about a .25 mpg lower.

This is so true...my computer print out showed a lifetime average of 6.4 MPG...when in all reality the best tank to tank mileage I ever got was 6.2 (before my recent mods I should say).
