Werner today told me that I wasn't eligible for hire because of 1 speeding ticket 2 years ago. It was knocked down to "defective vehicle" so its not really a true speeding conviction. They asked what the specific speed was- 70 in a 55 and because it was for 15 or more over I wasnt eligible.

Had I just said defective vehicle, I think I would have been ok. There is no way to tell other than an MVR right?

This scares me because this is the first company I have applied to since graduating trucking school last week!:biggrin_25524:

Just keep at it.. i was turned down by ~30 companies before i got my job.. With the economy the way it is, alot of the bigger companies are looking for experience and using any disqualifiers they can to weed through the applications.

that's probably not the real reason they wouldn't hire you. if it was knocked down to "defective equipment," then you were NOT convicted of speeding. the trucking company can make up whatever kind of arbitrary hiring rules they want to. I don't think you're losing anything by not getting on with werner.

Good points, thanks. I guess companies can afford to be very selective right now because of the "economy" (wow I get tired of hearing that!). I know it was only one company, but it was a little discouraging. "Defective equipment" could be nothing more than a burned out plate lamp! Thanks

like every one said. keep trying. if you have any smaller companies near you. try them. i found that smaller companies are more forgiving.

I got a friend who drove for Werner. He had an accident with a four-wheeler and it was proven in court the four-wheeler was at fault. No points to my friend. Werner put it as a " preventable accident" on his DAC. They refuse to take it off!

They are going to court to battle it out.

He has several opportunities to drive but the DAC keeps him from getting a job !!

I say to heck with Werner. They don't care about their drivers!
That's just my .02 cents worth!

15 mph over is a big deal. Get a copy of your MV report and go by that. If it doesn't say speeding then don't report speeding.

Your buddy can try to have it removed. But the end decision remains in the hands of the people who determined whether there was any possible way the accident could have been avoided. This will be the argument presented to a Judge and Jury.

"Preventable" isn't based on fault. It is based on the drivers ability and opportunity to avoid the accident to begin with.

Once/If a Lawyer has successfully presented the definition of "preventable" to a Jury. Your buddy will most likely lose his case. As most accidents "could" have been prevented.

I can give you a extreme and true example. Question posed during a safety meeting. If a driver spots a tornado coming, pulls off the road out of the path. Then the tornado changes path and turns the truck over. Was it preventable? Since it could have been avoided all together had the driver just kept going.

Safety Directer response was, "I don't know, I'll have to get back with you on that one."

He never did. Sad but true.

Try to get on with your local Taxi company they like a driver who knows how to get from point "A" to point "B" in a hurry. at least they do in Vegas. I always tip more when a cabbie hauls ace.
