What version of Quicken?

Business 2018. $200 staples. Sorry I just noticed you said Quicken. I use Quickbooks. You can use the online version if you don't mind paying $20 a month.

 

The problem I have had with Quicken is you constantly have to purchase the new year's software. They stop supporting your previous version and you can't download your accounts to it anymore. Same for Quickbooks. Lord knows how many versions I have of quicken.

Unfortunately, I spent the money on Quickbooks, thinking it would be different. It isn't. That means I have to manually enter all my data. No linking to the checking account.

If I had to do it over again, I'd either program my own database or make a spreadsheet...using OpenOffice...no more spending money on subscriptions or purchases that aren't supported.

That makes it one more area a new O/O can shave expenses on.

Final thought: With the availability to check accounts online instantly, I don't know if software is even worth it anymore. If you are paying an accountant, just send them the settlements and bank statements. Let them earn their money.

 

Quickbooks online will link to your account, or so I'm told? I'm going to change over from software quickbooks to online Jan 1. Taking pics of receipts and not having to worry about them again is worth $20 a month.
I SUCK at doing my books, I ALWAYS have projects in the shop that I would much rather be working on, so my books take a back seat. Then when I'm 8 months behind and I try to catch up....
It the, What was that charge for? Where is that receipt?
I'm good at keeping receipts and everything g has its place, but somehow a couple are ALWAYS missing.
I'm hoping the online version let's me do a lot of it as it happens? Time will tell.

 

I wish you luck with that, Elroy. I really do. I often am guilty of letting the receipts pile up, saving them for my "admin" day.

Quickbooks needst a yearly subscription, seems to be the way for all software nowadays (Burn in Hell, Adobe!), otherwise the online account access is shut off. That's what happened to me.

For the same $20 a month, it might be more worth your while to send those receipts directly to an accountant. That's what I did. However, I wouldn't ever recommend the accountant I used in Birmingham, so I won't mention their name.

Please update the post in a couple months with some input on how the Online version is doing for you. I might be interested in that.

 

I'll let you know How it works. I have an accountant to do my year end filing but the day to day bookkeeping I find expensive. Hopefully it works.
I plan on buying a new laptop that is books and banks only, no internet or bloatware. Guy down at the local computer store is building it for me now. He says he can eliminate a lot of the bloatware, and disable some of the rest.
I dont need crazy video cards and such, no gaming.
It will be small so it can live in the truck with me and I can use my phone as a hotspot to link with QB. hopefully I can keep on top of it that way.

I started using Quickbooks online a while ago and so far I am very satisfied. You can link up your business accounts and credit card accounts. Sometimes, you still have to manually consolidate the accounts even though the updates are automatic. There is also pretty comprehensive invoicing module. I think, but never tried, that it would be possible to link up your personal accounts but then it would probably mess up all the business accounting transaction flow if all the accounts were to be comingled like that. So it is best to have the personal side separated with Quicken. I tried the most basic stand alone version before but there were too many consolidations I had to do on frequent basis and I discontinued but now, since I am impressed by Quickbooks online I might give it another try - but it will be online version.
I am not sure what Home and Business addition does but I doubt is as comprehensive as QuickBooks.
