I had an interesting conversation today with an owner of an oilfield water hauling operation. They seemed to have some strange ideas about the HOS regulations and how they applied to them. This raised some questions.
I'm looking for information on the regulations that apply to and methods used for managing HOS in a Texas Oilfield exempt operation that runs CDL A trucks within a 100 air-mile radius.
I believe this operation would not be required to keep logbooks.
I believe the time sheets would be the records for HOS.
I believe you would still be limited to 12 hours driving daily.
I believe you would still be limited to 15 hours on duty daily.
I believe you would still be limited to 70 hours on duty weekly.
Someone please clear this up for me. In addition, please cite the Part/s of the Regulations that spell this out. They aren't exempt from the 70-hour rule, are they?

395.1 D offers the only exemption, and it deals with allowing waiting time to be logged as off duty.
I do not believe they would automatically fall under 100 mile air rule. Don't they tend to stay in their trucks as the drilling happens? They must return to the same location to use that exemption.
I would hazard a guess they fall under Texas Intrastate Hos rules though which can be viewed here.

Looks like 12 hours in any 15 and 8 hour breaks at a glance.BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
Anybody want to offer any input on the total hours you are allowed to operate in a 7 or 8 day period?
I have had more than one person say it is more than 70 but I can't find anything to support this.
The trucks do return to the terminal daily.Svoray Thanks this. -
Oilfield truckers only need 24hrs for reset so it's easy to go over 70 hrs in a 7-8 day period. You basically work oh say 5/14hr days, take the 6th off and work 14hrs on the 7th day equaling 84hrs in 7days.SHC, HeWhoMustNotBeNamed, BigJohn54 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Okay thanks. That was what I had come up with too. -
When I was with Haliburton, we ran 6 days a week on a 12hr shift. We started and ended our days at the Victoria, TX yard and ran under the 100 mile-air rule. If you never left Texas, you only needed a 24hr reset.
I never had a problem with the $$$ I was making and would still be doing it if life didn't get in the way and force me to move back north. -
Do you have to log a 30min break under the tx oilfield hos.
I say yes, but have 2 drivers saying you don’t.
Need clarification -
This applies to those hauling inTRAstate loads. That is freight that originates and delivers within the state. All other freight in considered inTERstate and requires driver to run the federal regs, 11/10/14/70. Oilfield exemption give a 24 hr reset.magoo68 Thanks this.
