Thanks. So leaving the back like that is okay? Any customers ever say anything? Seemed like a waste of time to add a full second tarp for a few inches. I just want to make sure I'm not cutting corners or being lazy about it.

Some ideas here.
Find the local billboard place and see if they have any of the ones they have changed out laying around. They are made from a lighter vinyl. You can cut them up into small pieces, like 10X10 or what ever you want. It won’t t have D rings to hook to, thats ok because your just going to use it as a filler for something like this. You can also make pad strips out of them.
Or you could go to a webe tools n crap, and buy a few of the cheap tarps they sell to do that job. -

Got padding underneath it 2...I put a bunch of gorilla tape on it when the tear was about a foot hoping it would hold me over 400 miles... No dice...SMH...
