Backhaul was gravy money on top, Rather than run empty it was EXTRA MONEY!!
Now it seems a way to try and justify underpaying freight and more of us owners need to tell brokers this and not take the loads.dino6960 and 7mouths2feed Thank this. -
Merriam-Webster (Unabridged Version) defines "Backhaul" as "a return trip across the same route". Brokers refer to "Backhaul" as "cheap haul rates back out of an area". Milkman defines "backhaul" as "some money to get out of a bad area you got paid good to go into is better than no money to get out, or better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick". Backhaul is just part of the game. Now, if you haul cheap into a bad area, then you haul cheap to get out of that bad area, in football terms, you're playing no better than the Tennessee Titans this year. Just my .02.

So.. thanks to the internet everything in the open is a backhaul anymore it seems.. Oh well, as long as Pharm doesn't have to back all the way to his destination to haul it.. -

Granted it is in most of the industry but not all, our company deals with a
specific market and we are paid round trip rates so that we can deadhead
back home. When we deliver our load and the same customer has
something going back where we came from we take the total we went for
and bring it back for them for half the price. If it charges a different customer
or goes somewhere out of the way they pay full price. -
Coonass I agree there are some niches that do pay for the deadhead back. There are some companies that will do that for good service rendered. In fact a seed wheat company did pay me very well for a round trip load...I had forgotten about that it has been a couple of years ago. I don't do very many round trip loads for them.
