I found a trailer shop that will do the mods to my flat deck trailer I'm wanting to do (make it a low step-deck).

I need a heavy haul 5th wheel because the trailer will have a kingpin under it like a semi stepdeck so I was planning to simply use a semi 5th wheel. I came across a good deal on one that has the right width mounting plate so I picked it up but now I'm second-guessing myself..

Is this thing too big? I know they are big but after getting it in the bed of my other truck I'm like umm yeah that's big and heavy. What do you guys think? Go with the semi 5th wheel or sell it and get one of the flat plate mount 5th wheel for smaller trucks?

The other option is to go with one of the lighter duty ones like this.
    https://www.amazon.com/Fifth-Wheel-...ywords=5th+wheel+plate&qid=1610305250&sr=8-23

I need it to be low as possible so I don't want to use the heavy-duty camper style up on risers. It needs to be a flatplate mount

Keeping the bed on the truck? If so you'll have trouble pulling the 5th wheel release. Just not enough room.
Also, it will likely cost as much to fabricate a mount as to just find a 5th wheel for your application.

It's going on a different truck. I have a F550 cab & chassis. I simply picked it up in my other truck. I'm not worried about fabricating mounts. I can build my own. This is the one I'm using for the gooseneck that I built. It's heavier duty than any hitch plates you'd buy. It's reinforced with that front angle, plus doubled at the ball and square tube on the edge. Any mounting plate I build will be better than what I could buy.

I just bought a new 40ft 25gn flatbed and I'm having the gooseneck chopped off and a 12ft step deck added in its place that will use a semi kingpin mount.. It will be like a mini flatbed step-deck when I'm done. I'll have 52 ft of deck space but the overall truck/trailer length will only grow by about 2 ft.

I would ask the people that will being the FMCSA inspection on you unit. They may not certify an inspection of a homemade installed 5th wheel...

Dude.. It's not a homemade 5th wheel hitch. it's a #### semi hitch and it mounts just like any semi hitch would mount to a semi. It's simply going on a smaller truck....

Adding a hitch like this is about as simple as it gets and doesn't even require a welder..

I'm simply undecided if I want to go through with using the semi 5th wheel or not due to the size..

You don't have to buy everything from shineytruckparts.com some of us are quite capable of building things like this for ourselves. In fact, if I had space and the time I likely would have built the trailer myself instead of buying one to get modified.

Either you poof this thread or find a shop that will do the modifications and award a new DOT sticker.

"proof this thread" makes zero sense. There is no DOT sticker on a hitch. You get a DOT inspection on your truck and yes my truck with the hitch I built and rated has one. Hitches have a rating... not a DOT sticker...

I can tell some of you guys have never in your life turned a wrench or built anything.

I guess we are living with the cereal box generation, who doesn't understand people can make things that don't come in a box from china...

Reese 30k fifth wheel hitch mounted to a 1/2” steal plate bolted to the frame. I had that setup on my 5500 and could tow anything the truck could handle.

That's nowhere near the capacity need. It too tall for one and the vertical hitch rating is only 7,5k.. My rear axle is rated at 13660.. That's a hitch for a 350/3500 or lower.

I was referring to the trailer modification. Is the shop that is doing the modification a trailer builder that can issue a new recertification or are you thinking the original trailer manufacturer will issue a recertification

Just trying to help you out.

    I can build virtually anything.

I built this boat when I was 14.

Rolled it upside down and completely redid it when I was 19. Designed and built the trailer in my dads house garage on the floor the same year.

4 inch drop axles I welded The spindles on. C channel sectioned and welded. Sandblasted and painted in Imron Towed like a dream at 90 mph.

    That was 38 years ago. I’ve built bigger and better since than. DEB050B3-593E-4272-B844-7CAFA1B46457.jpeg EB713DAD-BEE3-4C0E-81C6-C416FA22A409.jpeg BEC7ED5A-35B6-4679-A99A-CCE040ECB7EE.jpeg C399FDAB-6943-4B7C-8F80-3716B8EF4760.jpeg BB4C0703-DCFB-4FB1-BF73-B0263B8159E4.jpeg

And gutted and completely redid my 69 Roadrunner and built a 69 Chevelle SS clone out of a wrecked SS and a Malibu when I was in my teens while going to school and working 2 jobs.
