Hi there. I will be moving from AZ to SC on I-40 and am wondering if truckstops allow non-truckers to shower. Of course I expect to pay. I figure it will take me a couple of days and I hate to go that long w/o a shower so I figured this was a good place to ask. I know Petro let me back in the 70's but I don't know how it is today.

Thanks. May I ask a couple more questions?

What truck stops would you recommend along that route? I'm thinking that I would probably want to stop for a shower a couple of times so maybe somewhere around the TX/OK border area and then again around Little Rock. But since I've never been up around that way I'm not sure. I want to be safe.

Also, if a truck stop says they have WIFI does that mean that it is available or do you have to pay for it? Do most truck stops have WIFI?

if you go into a truck stop and ask for a shower, they're going to say "wait a minute, you're not a truck driver! I know every truck driver in the world!" naw, seriously, it's usually about $10 or so. occasionally, one may find a stop where they'll just GIVE it to ya if you go in there looking pathetic enough, and the manager isn't breathing down their neck. I've been ready to pull out my card (or cash) and they'll say "don't worry about it." most of the larger stops have WIFI. yes you have to pay for it - probably won't get a freebie on that.

How do you pay for WIFI? How much do they charge? As far as the shower goes $10 is kind of steep but it will be worth it.

I would still appreciate some recommendations. Thanks.

I can remember when showers were $9. the ol timers could probably tell you when it was a nickel. not sure about WiFi. just go to a few truck stop websites - it'll probably have rates on there.

Better yet, spring for a hotel. Even the cheapest flophouses have some sort of internet.

Pick your price on price line and plan your trip accordingly.

Little hint on the WIFI, there are a ton of motels/hotels that have WIFI that do not require passwords to log onto. If you make stops at exits with a various selection of motels close by or park a truck stop with some around, find a good strategic place to park and log on. Sometimes you will draw multiple signals and you can just trial and error until you grab one that works. I use to do that alot right from my truck. If i was at a truck stop that had a motel real close by I would park myself in the part of the truck stop closest to the place and see what happened. I got many hours of WIFI at no cost this way. Some you can even just go park yourself in the lobby and log on and nobody says a word if you just look like you belong there. Also, not sure if they have Krystal's fast food joints out that way but most of them provide free WIFI now as well. You might even look up and see if any of the states you are passing through have rest areas that provide WIFI,there are a few states doing that now.

Most showers are $10.00 but you might be able to ask a driver if they have an extra on their card or put you down as a co driver for free but the stops don't care if you're a driver or not as money talks! If you're driving a UHaul, 50 gals will get you a free shower if it's diesel. The WIFI is steep! You can either pay with a credit card or go in and get a gift card. Just do NOT go to your banking website or any of your usual places that have any sensitive info on you as WIFI is now a big target of hackers and scammers!

If I were you I'd stop at the TA and Pilot and Petro and get their locater guides for all of their stores and that way you can plan where you need to stop for fuel and shower. Petro is IMHO the best in showers and believe it or not Pilots next unless it's one of the NEW Truck Stops of America (TA)
Have fun on your trip ! You could check out Wal-Mart as I think they have a non contract USB broadband card that you could pay for 1 month and have internet the whole trp instead of relying on WIFI. Now don't forget that McDonalds has free WIFI as do a lot of other places. Biut as I said I don't trust WIFI any ore after morons tried to get into my computer using windows explorer and I had to laugh at that!
    Good Luck

Thank you all for the responses. The reason I don't want to get a motel is that I can't sleep long enough to warrant getting one. I figure I can just pull over for a couple hours every now and then and I'll be ready to go again.

I remember when the Petro opened up out in El Paso. That was my regular shower stop when I used to drive between CA and TX. I'll be sure to check them out again.

I'll also look into the advice of parking near a motel that has WIFI. My laptop has lots of protection so I'm not too worried about someone getting into it. There are others out there much easier to hack.

I had never heard of Walmard having those cards. I have Verizon wireless but someone told me that I could not just get temporary service.
