Yeah, I've always thought that, too.

I know that WC is a quantifiable effect on exposed skin.

And then the learned among us would say, "But it only applies to living tissue."

And I would say, "So you're trying to tell me that a stopped diesel engine doesn't feel the effects of a 30mph wind at 35°, with all the engine's residual heat being sucked out of the oil pan and radiator, thickening the oil and cooling the cylinders and making the engine harder to start? Reducing the capacity of the batteries in conditions that force the starter to work harder?"

And the learned one says, "Yes, of course. Wind chill does not affect inanimate objects."

And I say, "Well, I disagree, because I have been driving a truck for awhile, and I have experienced the effects I've described."

To which the learned one always comes back with: (All Together Now)

    "Correlation is not causation."

Then I say, "Yeah, well, 'Perception is reality', Perfesser. So unless you're coming out at 0330 in a howling blizzard to jump start my truck, Frack You!"

My younger son thought his old man was a right wing anti government kook when he was in college. After graduating getting a job when he got his first paycheck he looks over all the deductions and apologized to me and has joined the dark side.

I signed up for the 30 day free trial of 2021.
Haven’t even made it 30 days and I want to cancel.

That’s because the confounder. The third part of the equation that never gets factored.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for.

I reassure my wife that all young men must pass through this phase, as I had to with my father.

Even with that knowledge, we still find it painful that an ostensibly "Christian-centered university" took my good hearted son and returned to me an angry, avowed Marxist atheist.

And I helped pay for it.

    @Espressolane

I looked up "confounder variable" because I didn't know what it meant.

So, my takeaway from what I read is that, although WC is a quantifiable effect on exposed flesh, it is influenced by variables such as poor blood circulation, prior exposure, dehydration, etc.

Now, the wind chill table can't quantify the effect on cold iron, but cold air blowing past a conductive surface will hasten loss of residual heat.

The effect the cold has on the ability of the truck to start depends upon variables such as fuel, electrical, and cooling system integrity, length of time of exposure, etc.

So you might not be able to make a windchill table for a truck, but windchill affects it, nevertheless.

I still feel like I'm missing the point, somehow, so if you have minute could you break down the confounder in the situation of windchill vs person vs truck.

And if you could give me the Scholastic Books version, like "The Day The Confounder Came To Our School."

    Thanks!

All WC does is to reduce the temperature of the truck to ambient faster than would be the case without WC. WC cannot reduce the temperature below actual so two trucks, all things being equal, will have the exact same starting characteristics regardless of /WC.

I believe that on a molecular level all materials or cellular matter can be quantified to reflect its loss of temperature with a impartial baseline.

The milatary baseline for WC is a 200# 6 ft male all things being equal. Heat loss is measured by Kcals of energy loss. Now back to your regular programming.

And conversely, the wind hastens your body cooling to ambient temperature, which, if it were 35°F, as in the original example, would be "exceedingly bad".

Thanks! I feel smarter, thanks to another seminar on WIIS!
