So I have found several threads about the differences between the 10 & 13 speed transmissions but none has quite explained one thing:
When you are in high range getting ready to shift to the next physical gear, they say to flip the side switch back to the "low" position then shift. But this sounds like the same as downshifting to the lower position of the same gear you are in.
How do you prevent it from automatically downshifting when you want to upshift? Hope that makes sense? I have to take a Road Test on Monday and have only driven a 10 speed in training...
Thanks!
Dumb question about a 13 speed trans

When shifting from say "Overdrive" to the next gear up to it's "Direct" (Let's use 7th gear to 8th for an example..... ) flip the lever back in neutral.....Then bring bring the gear shift back to the rear engaging 8th...
You just have to develop a rhythm...it takes practice......
Driving an 18 is no different except you are splitting the bottom end instead of just the top end of the tranny....
If you really would like challenge...
Go find a truck with a "Brownie"......Trekker1 Thanks this. -
It will not shift until you let off the throttle. Say you are in 11th gear. You pull the thumb switch back. As long as you stay on the throttle, nothing will happen. Let off the throttle and it will try to downshift to 10th gear, but will not be able to engage 10th gear until the engine speed matches the tranny. In other words, if you are to downshift, you will have to rev the motor to make it catch the lower gear.

It won't shift until you either hit the clutch or take your foot off the go pedal...it won't shift under pressure.
When you make the upshift you're talking about...it won't shift (up or down) until you hit the clutch and/or move the shifter out of gear on your way to the next gear.
Down shifting in the same gear...flip the switch down and bump the throttle.Trekker1 Thanks this. -
13 speeds are so easy to drive, but hard to describe on the net. If you're really at a loss going into this roadtest - do this maybe - When you preselect to go into high range, also at the same time flip the thumb selector to the front, then shift thru the upper 4 as though you are driving a 9 speed. That or simpley forget about the thumb selector alltogether, and just drive it like a 9. (Unless the guy is specificly looking to see if you can in fact drive a 13.)Trekker1 Thanks this. -

Good thing he didnt ask about a 2 stick LOL

Sounds like the super 10 i did a road test on... split each gear... its a lil different but its not bad... you'll do fine

On this video the driver is moving the splitter while still in "Overdrive".....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6TDcPuWpmc
It sounds like he's double-clutching......Which, if you are taking a test.....I would recommend doing it that way.....
When I tool my road test..I was hard-headed and tach shifted....the examiner dinged me down a few points.....still passed though.....
Good luck... -
Thanks all for the replies. The video helps alot- The company understands I haven't driven the 13 before and said they would show me, but I am trying to be as prepared as possible. If I pass, I get the job. I am also going to be driving a bigger tractor than at school. If you can believe it, I learned on a freightliner truck with a sleeper but only one rear axle! Had never seen such a set-up. The test will be in a Pete 387...
