GPS is a great tool, I always use mine. This however, Google maps, and a pen/paper are a great combination. As far as once you get on a wrong road the first step is DON'T PANIC! Yesterday I had an "adventure" in Denver, a city I know pretty ###### well. I ran into 5 different new construction zones that their detours were NOT truck friendly. Flashers on at 1 of them and construction guys helped me out of the situation before I went in deeper.

 

Please tell me your company doesn't use Copilot. If they do, you MUST get a Garmin or a Rand McNally.

It has 208 laminated pages of maps and other useful info geared (see what I did there) towards the trucker.
If you want something with a little more hot sauce, then this is the one for you. It is laminated and is 37% larger due to larger scale. It has 324 pages full of trucking bliss. It runs about $60 but it is well worth it. It is one of my most prized "trucking essentials".

 

Hate to say it..well not really. I have a Rand McNally e-log with the truck gps built in and at times it is worthless. I carry a car Garmin also to double check. One thing I always have used is a map also. Phone numbers and a paper map is all we had a few short years back.

 

I'd say the big difference now is that calling most customers for information is useless. I remember sitting at the table with my dad while he called a customer on the payphone, got accurate truck directions, and a decent dinner. He also had a briefcase full of city and state maps, and notes on his previous places in a rolodex. There's good and bad with each generation and change in technology, but it never hurts to have those old school skills and tools.

 

Yes it is at times worthless, rude or don't know east from west. But it was that way at times 30 years ago also. Call me odd, but i write down the directions of everywhere i p/u or deliver. Believe me i have quite the collection.
