I see older trucks being retired as the parts become more expensive and harder to find. When diesel fuel becomes more expensive to use than electricity recharging.
That is when the Green movement will try to regulate the older trucks.

Slowly as older trucks are removed thru attrition. I don't think an all inclusive ban will come for many years.

Many larger truck companies don't allow pre ELD trucks now.
Maybe in 10 years the only way to run a pre-emission truck will be to have your own authority. With many shippers limiting the age of a truck getting loaded. Similar to some shippers that require a trailer not to be older than 10 years.

I hear it happens with paper loads.
Also some companies won't lease on older trucks. I drive a 1999 truck. I have never been turned down for a load either.

I only had one broker they told me the trailer had to be 10 years or newer and he said that particular shipper just was extremely particular and finicky about that.

My trailer is a 2002 and I've gone places where they rejected other trailers.

Automotive is very picky. The only plant I've been to that didn't require a less than 10yr old trailer was a Chrysler in Detroit (JNAP). GM, other Crysler, Ford, Honda, Toyota all required 10 years or newer.

That said automotive tends to be low paying loads, so no shock you haven't pulled one yet.

P&G will take a quick look inside the wagon at the gate to make sure she's dry. Hauled lots of paper towels outta there

Like it or not, the old iron is being phased out already. Sad to say but you can only rebuild/repair stuff so many times before its finished. Very few are dedicated enough to put in the effort needed to keep an older truck operable.

And this is why regulators don't care about old iron. Same with rumors of ELD going pre-2000 and several other rumors.
It's not an issue as it's a self correcting problem and the number of people using that old of equipment is statically insignificant

You can't beat those old Cats. I had my 3406A block and crank at the machine shop 18 months ago. Block had never been line bored and crank had not been ground undersize. Plastigauged my mains and they were still 0.001" to 0.002" under the maximum clearance spec for new bearings. Let's see an ISX that'll do that in 2040!
