Hey TruckerDave,
That's ###### interesting - the pens! I was a "plankowner" (original crewmember) on the USS California (CGN 36), now in mothballs. I'd be curious to know if you or anyone else out there knows where she is now. I don't know when she was decommissioned - best guess sometime in the 90s.jtx87 Thanks this. -
It is funny that you should mention the USS California. I just spoke with a company this morning that actually has pieces from that ship for sale! I planned on purchasing some of that wood later this week. I'll let you know when I do that, as I may have something for you in a few weeks!
The USS California was decommissioned in the '50's and if I recall my research was sold for scrap in 1959. That ship was one of the ships that was actually sunk in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1943! It was struck by 2 topedos and 2? bombs in the harbor that day. The Navy actually salvaged and rebuilt the boat and she contined to serve, with honor, for quite a few more years!
Again, thank you for yor service!JustSonny Thanks this. -
I just realized my mistake! You were refering to CGN 36 and I was thinking of BB 44! For those scoring at home, those are 2 completly different ships! You probably were not even born yet when the USS Calfornia that I was thinking of was decommissioned! I was so excited after having made contact with someone today that has wood from BB 44, that I really didnt comprehend your post. DUH!!!
BTW, I looked up your ship, it was decommissioned in 1999, but I could not find where it is at today! Regardless, of which ship you served on, thank you anyway. I will let you know if I find any more info on your ship.
I found it! The USS California (CGN 36) was decommissioned in 1999. In May of 2000, it was "stricken" from the Naval Register and is now in Pudget Bay, WA. I assume it is awaiting it's final disposition there. Most likely, it will be sold for scrap.Last edited: Nov 8, 2009

Down time for me. Rest. Clean the inside of the cab, windows, floors, dusting. Laundry including bed clothes. Clean myself up. A good meal. Paperwork. A movie (usually results in a nap). A nice long walk (weather permitting). And more rest. I know this all sounds too exciting, but that's how I roll. Keeps me out of trouble, and keeps the expenses down.

A few years ago I bought a Montague Paratrooper folding bike. While it doesn't have the feel of my old Cannondale, it rides pretty well and has full sized 26" wheels. I like it well enough, and it's a stout bike too.
I did make a concession to the road and mounted some fat-hybrid tires, as I didn't need a bunch of squirmy lugs down the middle as I ride on asphalt mostly anyway. The tires (Kenda Krisps) do have side-lugs, which provide good bite when I *do* leave the pavement.
Another option would be to mount 1.5" inverted tread tires. They'll be lighter, easier rolling (narrower, slightly higher pressure), and the ones I used to run made the coolest suction-cup noise on wet surfaces.
Of course, I still love riding roadie. This is me with my trusty Kona.
JustSonny, Baack and Torque2Haul Thank this. -
Decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 9 July 1999, California entered the Nuclear Powered Ship-Submarine recycling program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 1 October 1998. Scrapping was completed on 12 May 2000.
Sorry, brother. I'm a former squid, too. It breaks my heart. -
- Good morning TruckerDave, "Golden Grizzlies", I think, is the nickname for California's crew(s). I did not get any wood when she commissioned. I was in the hospital at the time. I'd been in a pretty nasty car wreck on the was home from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard(where California was at the time). I do have my "Plank Owner" certificate in with my other records. Thanks for you interest and replies!
