Ah. Reminds me of my vast and expansive OTR career of a few months.
Going over those passes headed east, I found it interesting to observe where all the dual tire skidmarks were.
Some of those curves on the downhill can be deceptive.
Luckily, I drove like a granny down the grades.

The morning should be fun. 70+ MPH winds on the road.

If you're lucky enough to be running on fresh powder before they plow it, the cables do fine. Not quite as good as chains but okay. You'll notice the stopping power isn't quite as good.
On hard-pack snow or any kind of ice I'll take chains every time. The cables don't seem to "bite" like a good set of square link chains.

First time I heard about socks was the Greyhound driver fueling up next to me. Said he used them all the time in winter.

If I've got cables it's to satisfy someone else, if I have a traction problem IRON just me and my .02

I don't know crap about cables or chains. What exactly is it about cables that makes them let go sooner than chains? I would think your inability to really tighten cables would be a primary factor. How about a modification like criss-crossing the cables with heavy wire that's tightened using a turnbuckle or something similar.

    Just spitballin'...
