I need a CB radio, Does anyone have any suggestions for a good radio setup? I was going to get either a Cobra 29 or General Lee, still have'nt made up my mind completely there, and use a mirror mounted 4 foot fiberglass firestick off the drivers side mirror. I'm not going to be talking alot, but want to be able to talk if i need to. Thanks ya'll.
First Radio suggestions?

I would go with the regular 29 classic. You can get them for about the same price as the T stops online and they will be aligned and peaked to be on frequency etc at no extra cost.
Logan76 Thanks this. -
Another vote for the 29 although don't could out the Cobra 25...it's just as good as the 29 and for less. Also the Uniden PC 68 is another good choice.
The General Lee is nice but not needed unless you want to be a super trucker with echo. Also some of the frequencies found on the General Lee are not legal for use on CB and can get you into a lot of trouble by the FCC which can result in a very hefty fine.Logan76 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the replies fella's, I don't know jack about CB's, I assumed the General Lee would get me further reception, and since I'm most likely going to be driving local doing tri-axle work, I wanted to have nice far reception. I was looking today, maybe I will do a 2 foot firestick off each mirror, the 4 foot will be too long, espercially angled out to miss the top of the dump bed.

Surely the dump bed doesn't extend out over the mirrors, you wouldn't be able to see anything in them. I think you would be very disappointed with the 2 foot firesticks, for transmit and receive both. I'd stick with one antenna on the driver's side, especially if you'll be on small roads much, hard to keep a passenger side antenna out of the trees. I think a longer Firestick or Francis would be a good choice, you can buy them anywhere if you break one. You might also look at a fold-over mounting stud, you could get it out of the way if needed. Do you know what kind of truck you'll be driving?Logan76 Thanks this.

I will be for sure on small roads alot, 2 lanes and sometimes dirt roads, seems like they are unavoidable here in PA. So would you suggest a 4 foot firestick on the driver side? Should I worry about grounding?
Here's what I mean't about the bed, I've got family and freinds that haul coal, seems like they all run 9 foot whips off the front bumper like this truck. I don't really want to go that route.

It is my experience that you will see no better reception between the GL then the 29. I have found the galaxy to have slightly better ears then the Lee or the cobras.Logan76 Thanks this.

The only thing that's going to give you better reception is a darn good antenna. The 2 inch firesticks are #### IMO. Yes ground your antennas well.
Logan76 Thanks this. -
What's a good antenna? Should I run a steel whip off the mirror? like say a single 3 or 4 footer? I'm open to all suggestions here fella's I don't like to spend money blindly LOL. Thanks again for being patient with my dumb self.

My favorite fiberglass antennas are skipshooters. Harder to come by, but darn good antennas. I also like the Predator 10K, but it is pricey and only a center load, whereas the skipshooter that is top loaded, will prove better in your circumstance there. Either should perform well tho. You will like either the Cobra 29 or the General Lee. I have both and really like both. My preference goes to the General Lee personally, I am just an export radio fan. But keep in mind, that close distance talking, for instance, the truck and the loader at the picture above...the General Lee improperly tuned will splatter in the loader's radio and you will be basically inaudible. The Cobra will have less chance of doing that, again depends on the tune. But it is more likely to happen with the General throwing out twice the RMS power than the Cobra.
Just my $.02, really cant go wrong either way. Just get a GOOD antenna, and make sure your radio is cleanly tuned, not hacked and splattered!
