OK first relax, this is a BS thing to deal with. I or someone in my office goes through this every year.

I have a dispute about the bad wording used on some of the questionnaires.

So about the navigation unit, I don't remember what chip set used in the RM unit, I took a few apart but threw them out later on.

    They don't ping.

That's stupid to think it does on their part.

Just like GPS is the satellite in the sky, not the unit on your dash.

Those satellite are the size of a bus in many cases.

They send a consent signal pointed to earth and the receiver sees many satellites and calculates the position of the receiver. in a navigation unit, it calculates a map location to display.

The data stream is updated and it is measured per second. Older units like some of my qualcomm units update every half second. Some of the newer ones like the one I have in my pickup updates 25 times a second.

That said, the RM unit updates its data 10 times a second.

OK about the audit itself, they want to know the miles driven within each state, the time and odometer (sometimes they ask for that) you cross the state line, sometimes where you put fuel in the tanks and when. I had one audit who only looked at the trucks activity in Texas. This is because what it was doing was going from a dock in Oklahoma to a dock in Texas - a distance of 15 miles. That's it and they were concern there was no way this was done for months on end.

    Hope this helps.

I guess I Can't find the info I'm looking for if it doesnt exist right lol thank you! I know that my GPS is pretty accurate because I rerouted all trips through Pc Miler and they were pretty close! It's just nerve racking sitting here trying to fill out paperwork and feeling like your about to fail the BIG TEST!

I agree with everything except I'd be inclined to give them the 25 times per second. Let them think it's "far more than adequate for their purposes," and hopefully they'll be more inclined to focus on something else.

Am I missing something here? Sometimes...heck a lot of times... I don't even use a gps at all. And I have been through like 4 of them so I have no history to provide. The only thing ifta should be interested in is miles per state and gallons of fuel purchased in what states.

Yeah you should be okay as long as it's UNDER 5 minutes.

If you're still worried you should call Rand, that's the more sure-fire way to get exactly what you need. Someone there should know, although their help articles don't have anything on it, I'm sure they've been asked multiple times.

Don't worry, relax. You got one of those auditor who trying to appears smart and widely educated because he is part of the government. You know the truth, he isn't.
Tell him you have GPS NAVIGATOR not GPS TRACKER. GPS navigator receives satellite signal constantly and update position every 20 microseconds.
Also tell him, the pinging means technique to locate something by sending signals and receive respond signal with direct location or to calculate it.
For example - bat pinging ultrasonic scream to locate obstacles or mosquito.
    Submarine pinging underwater adversary submarine.
GPS tracker will send location if receives request to do so or programmed to send it.
For example container or trailer GPS trucker can send location and temperature to the broker every hour.

For example, the GPGGA sentence contains the follow:

    • Time: 235317.000 is 23:53 and 17.000 seconds in Greenwich mean time
    • Longitude: 4003.9040,N is latitude in degrees.decimal minutes, north
    • Latitude: 10512.5792,W is longitude in degrees.decimal minutes, west
    • Number of satellites seen: 08
    • Altitude: 1577 meters

The data is separated by commas to make it easier to read and parse by computers and microcontrollers. This data is sent out on the serial port at an interval called the update rate. Most receivers update this information once per second (1Hz), but more advanced receivers are capable multiple updates per second. 5 to 20Hz is possible with modern receivers.

Now is bad news. IFTA auditor will use PC MILER to calculate your miles from location to location. When they did my audit i gave them every day detailed driving map.

So my IRP was accurate but IFTA little bit off. Tell me how? I did use same data for IRP and IFTA.
So $36.00 penalty. But my dude was honest and warned me about small penalty forefront.

Yes they asking miles per state. How do you track it? Stop at the state line to write odometer readings? Outside is 21st century and technology. But government don't trust in technology they forced us to use. Paradox!
