Does anybody know the starting pay and top pay now, some 2 years later in 2021 for linehaul guys?

@brian991219 Is it still like this, where there's mostly autos and very few manuals? Or does it depend which terminal you're out of?

Also how much dockwork are the linehaul guys doing? Or is it like Estes and Old Dominion where the linehaul drivers don't have to work the docks?

Zero dock work in my experience but I think there’s a few short hub runs that require dock work. Ask the TM you interview with what kinda runs they offer.

When I was at Saia, my PVD->NWB bid was last in the lane and dispatch instructions from central always had "WORK NWB DOCK UNTIL RETURN". Sucked because what else was I going to do from 1230 until my 0445 gate time? In all fairness, I didn't work the dock, I ran the yard horse instead or took a nap. The supervisors didn't give me any grief if I decided to take a nap.

    What about pay?

And what about transmissions are they still mostly autos and "very few manuals" for the linehaul drivers, as another poster said earlier in this thread?

If you have 18 months of experience you’ll start at .70 a mile. If you have no LTL experience I’m not sure what you’d start at. .65 maybe?
I’m guessing they will have mainly autos.
Do you know how to operate a manual transmission?

I have just over 2 years experience OTR dry van & reefer, all with the same company. But no LTL experience.

I have no manual restriction on my license I tested in a manual. But it's been 2.5 years since I've driven a manual and I was never good at it in the first place. Not even sure I could pass a driving test at this point, it's just been so long. Although if I took my time I might be alright. I would definitely prefer an auto to drive though (I know drivers don't get a choice).

That starting pay of $0.65 CPM isn't bad at all! I was thinking Saia was one of the lower paying LTL companies but I think $0.65 CPM is about what Estes starts drivers at. Do you get paid for drops, hooks and fueling at Saia like you do at OD and Estes or no?

With Saia the drop/hook is figured into your dispatch. We would get .45 of an hours pay with every dispatch you pulled pups and you were expected to put the lead to a door. If you are asked to put the tail to a door they pay you for an additional drop which worked out to like $8 but you have to make certain they put it in for you.

On the first page it was mentioned absolutely no phone at all with the driver facing cameras. Does that mean you can't put it on the dash or windshield out of reach either?

If so, kind of a dumb question but let's say that before I start driving, could I hook the phone up to the radio area (so that the phone charges and so the audio plays through the trucks speakers) and put my phone in the passenger seat out of reach, so I could play my Itunes music? Or an audiobook or podcast or something?

Would they go for any of this or is it a hardcore no phone period not anywhere in sight in the truck?

What about eating a snack like a pack of crackers or something? Or drinking bottled water?

Also do they provide a GPS for the trucks if they won't let you use a GPS device on your phone out of reach while your driving (like on the windshield)?

And do you feel like they go overboard with the driver facing cameras or do they mostly leave you alone unless there's a critical event or something?

    bentstrider83 Thanks this.
