I see dump trucks being parked at the drivers home at night... what would be the reason for it? I know most dump truck drivers are local but taking home the dump truck doesn't make sense to me... could someone shed some light on this?

Makes perfect sense. Why burn your own gas when you can burn the boss’s? My biggest reason for bringing my truck home is on cool mornings especially I can start it up first thing and by the time I’m ready to go my truck is warmed up.

Also I have more tools at home so if I have some little problem to fix it’s easier to do it at home. Easier to clean the inside at home. Some probably wash the truck at home etc etc.

Sometimes, after putting in a 14-16+ hour day it's just easier to take the truck home than to take it back to the yard at the end of the day, then get in your personal vehicle and drive home, just to turn around and drive it back to the yard the next day.

I am a local driver and I take my truck and trailer home any time the load takes me past the house.

    201 and OldeSkool Thank this.

Hmm, that's quite perceptive. Most dump truck pay is "by the load", meaning, the more loads, the more you make. Most gravel pits hours are 7am- 4pm, and many times, you could make it to the pit for a "preload" for the next day, leave early, dump the load and be at the pit at 7am with a load already under your belt. While my boss encouraged that, I hated it, and would lolly-gag so I'd just miss the pit closing. Didn't pay enough to wake up at 3 am to deliver some load that paid $12 bucks, or whatever.

Because I own it and I’m in it more than my home. I have a yard I can park it at as it goes there for the weekends or when I need to do maintenance/repairs. But it’s nice to wake up and get ready from the house. I have to drive with 4 wheelers all day. Let’s not start the day upset before I get to my truck.

I don't take mine home all the time but when I do it can mean up to 1.5 hours more time at home and save 20 miles.
Local dump truck work in my area is usually an 8 hr day on average, if you are doing utility work you could be down to a 6 hour average so we can run a night shift also and that pays a 6 hour minimum but could be more than 8 so if I run a double shift I can save 3 hours in travel time, that is better used sleeping

I'm sorry you were not treated better if my guys pre-load or run extra or late load it is all hourly plus overtime and double time over 12 just like a real company job not the by the load bull that so many in this business put up with hell I even give monthly and yearly bonuses all based on your trucks production last year each of my drivers received a total bonus of between 4k and 7k
If I payed my guys by the load I would still bonus for an extra load as that is were the money is because we are limited in the number of hours we can run increasing the load count by 1 load everyday is the money load !

    OldeSkool and 201 Thank this.

Yeah, that was 30 years ago, and EVERYBODY was paid % then. Back then, dump truck outfits were, shall we say, not the best, usually no background checks whatsoever, if you could pull leeevers, you were in. Home wasn't the only place you'd see dump trucks after hours. Most "watering holes" had special parking for them,,,
