@D.Tibbitt Good to see your still doing it. And thanks for hanging with the TTR gang! Speaking for myself(and others, I hope), always appreciate the veterans and old timers sharing experience and knowledge...:occasion5:

We paradoxically use both. And now that I am with an outfit that uses rope. I have started to appreciate it heavily. Not that I've really got to use it but I got to play around with it in the yard. I mean from what I gathered the only tarped loads we do on the low decks are mostly out of Long Beach.

But the deck actually is set up with the quick hooks for the rope. So maybe I'll get to drag it out sometime.

From an outsider just observing the open deck world, the idea of rope instead of bungees seems cumbersome. Do you thread the needle the length of the tarp, or is there another trick to using rope? Am I making it seem like more of a pain in the butt in my head than it is in reality?

I can see it being faster, but only if your trailer has rope hooks. If you had to thread it around spools and through the d-rings I would imagine that bungees would be faster?

It depends on a few things. It also depends how you lay out your equipment. I know some guys just leave the rope on the tarp. You know pre-string the d rings. If you have a trailer with either the Rope hooks. And they also make hooks for those ropes that you can pre string on there. Or if you want to get ultra clever with a flatbed it ain't set up for it. You could actually take the hooks like you find on the bungees clip one side onto the rope clip one side on to the rail be done with it.

The thing is is that in some situations bungees are more ideal and in some situations rope is more ideal. A lot of it comes down to your equipment and some of it I suppose comes down to your freight.

Another thing you can do is get a spool of 3/8 three strand poly rope, cut it into two foot sections, or whatever is appropriate, splice a small eye into each end of the pieces and you have instant bungee cord extenders. If you don't have a lot of old S-hooks you can thread one end of the jumper through the hole on the other end.
Always keep an eye out for broken bungees and salvage the old s hook for future use.

If you don't splice, check this out. It's really easy.

If you have some old cable you can weave an eye into the end. Just don't use it for overhead lifting.

Had to get to scale real quick 10m away before they left. 2 counterweights I figured I had it, but one never knows. Just a few inches. I’m like really?

I’m here for the night anyway. Now I can xchain it and roll on home finally
