Sorry, not entirely true. That low gear is made of the same material as all the others, and is used to break inertia, so it's just as tough. I'm telling you, it's advised not to be used to avoid hitting reverse, is what I read..

The gears are all the same steel material. When you look at the older 13’s they were all the same gear layout for the most part. The 613 and 9513 were. But with different ratios. They had different patterns mostly due to air valving. The 613 has 3 gears in the “low” hole of a 9513. So that tells me that the 9513 “mystery” gear is there for real but is not advertised. The mystery gear is redundant in a way and is so close to 4th that it almost overlaps it and that is why I think Fuller never advertised it because an upshift to it would be too close to 4th to gain any acceleration.

The first uprated 12513’s were exact same as 9513’s except higher torque rating due to larger output shaft dia.

Remember these came out when twin sticks still ruled the roads and many of those combos had overlapping gears that would drive drivers crazy.

I am new to 13 speed but I paid for it and installed it myself, if that gear was made out of glass they would lock you out if it. I use it instead of dropping to the low side all the time on corners.

If it fails I’ll be sure to come back and report my findings. CD4391AD-3BE5-4AA5-9F2D-CC37107CDBF8.jpeg

I figure it's gotta be easier on the transmission than or rather the syncronizers than constantly going from high to low

Then why does Eaton use that gear position in a 10 speed? I don’t care what kinda driver you are you won’t get one in reverse while rolling forward. Especially at 20mph or so

If I'm not mistaken, the old 10 speeds became a 9 speed for this very reason. It won't go in reverse, but eliminates the clashing if you hit reverse. I just read what Eaton recommends.

U pattern was standard, H pattern was optional. Top cover is the only difference. Direct is still in the front gear position of the main box.

I'm from old school and almost always used that gear to stay on the high side and make a intersection turn left or right unless I had to slow to the point of down shifting to a lower gear than that granny gear.

So the consensus is the mystery gear is okay to use?
