How bad is it when you curb your steer tires? Example: climbing curbs with your steer tires, rubbing against curbs etc.
Today I went for a delivery and curbed my drive tires and climbed the steer onto the curb. This place had torn up grass and the curb was half broken where I curbed my wheel. There really was no option from what I saw. Hate places not meant for 53' footers. Now my tire has marks on it.
Any concern about curbing your tires?

The guys that work in our shop and my fleet manager have told our drivers that is better to go slow up and over the curb then rub the sidewall up against it. We do food delivery with 48 foot reefers so we deal with curbs all the time

I carried some cut down 4x4s on tour to lay next to curb.
Bungees to hold up the flaps to.
But who does that anymore or cares.Lostmykey, Rideandrepair, slow.rider and 2 others Thank this. -
Yes go very gingerly up the curb. Some places any other option won't work. Gotta do it every now and then

The 2x or 4x4 trick will work as long as your not trying to do it in a city intersection Lol. If you do have to curb it do it so you hit it at a perfect 90° angle. Less of a chance of messing up the tire compared to say hitting it at a 45° angle and just creep up it

Hitting a curb with a tire can break the cords in the tire, and will shake like a whxxx in church. Lot of drivers complain about uneven tire steer wear, and that's one reason why. I suppose, if you simply must run a curb, (and who has time to set out 4x4's?) Go slow, but even that could ruin a sidewall.

Because of the infrastructure, it's not possible for a general OTR driver yanking a 53 footer to avoid a curb. Do so slowly and BEWARE some tractors have their horns mounted underneath. YES, you can snap one off in a second!

I attached a screenshot of the customer on question. In essence blind side backing could have avoiding the curb bit I think it's a bit more dangerous. The bottom was the dock and the top arrow was the curb. Looks tighter than it looks on Google maps. Can already see the grass damage.
Thanks for all the feedback.Attached Files:
