IRP And IFTA

IFTA is free, you just have to apply. For plates... different states vary, I can't tell you about GA. We paid around $1400 for 48 state apportioned in TX. I've heard of other states being as high as $2500 though.

 

GA DMV will be able to tell the plate cost for the first year. You will have to list estimated mileage (they provide these numbers) for each state you wish to operate in. Either the first or second renewal you will start presenting your actual miles at which time your registration charges will be adjusted to represent the percentage you traveled in each jurisdiction.

Remember to keep accurate mileage and trip records for both IRP and IFTA. When states decide to audit owner operators they almost always involve significant fines. If you don't have the records they will make their own estimates, and that will never work in your favor.

 

Depending on the year of your truck it will be vary. Mine is a 2002 and 48 state plates GA apportioned where $1300. IFTA is either $3 or $6 I can't remember which....

 

I've never heard of a truck registration being tied to the model year, other than personal vehicles eligible for 'Antique' plates.
IFTA should be free, it is in NC and any other state I'm familiar with.

 

GA base plate goes by the year. It has something to do with state taxes. The $3 or $6 is what they chareged me for the sticker. I can only tell you what I know and this is what I paid in GA ALL states are different. The OP asked about GA so how they do it in the other 49 states is irrelevant.

Also they CAN NOT tell you what the plate will cost. They will only give you that information AFTER you have filed for the plates. Been there done that and argued till blue in the face about wishing I could give a customer a price "after" I had completed the job.

Lacoma, Depending on what name you file under will also determine what month you will have to renew. Example last name Rogers will renew in September. SO you would pay a prorated charge till Sept of 2010. If you are applying for the first time they will give you a temp cab card which is good for until you pay the bill or 30 days expiration at which time they will then issue the hard plate. It takes about 10 days before you get the hard plate once you pay the original bill. Any changes and renewals must be paid in full at the time of change. If you are leasing on then you will need a copy of their mcs-150 and a copy of the lease agreement along with a paid 2290 reciept and scedule A,B and C. And proof of insurance.

 

Lots of states charge by year. Don't know if they still do but OK for years hammered new cars and trucks. Always wondered why I saw so many clunker up there until friend in Ardmore told me. The older the cheaper.

 

It's called an ad vorlem tax. The older the vehicle the cheaper it is to register.

 

Florida charges you an additional $100 if you don't have a tag to transfer to the new car at the time of registration. One way or another "they gonna getcha sukkka"

 

And I think the $3 charge for the IFTA sticker is for mailing purposes. Don't quote me on that though. Come to think of it, every sticker Georgia issues is $3... My emergency light decal was $3 as well.
