You've been asking these used truck questions for how long now? 18 months? 2 years?

I'm not a mechanic, but could have bought one and rebuit it by now. I have 10 years left, and have $10 says I'm fully retired by or if you ever actually pull the trigger on a truck.

I say the OP buys Casper. 2 problems solved. Dealers are only taking advantage of the shortage. O/Os with realistic expectations are a better source for a used Truck. Better records too. Most Dealer Trucks I’ve seen have no history at all available. Most are from the auctions. Few are trade ins.

I can't wait for the questions on the freight you're going to book.

    Is this load too long?
    Is this load too short?
    Is this load too heavy?

I usually shop a vehicle for a long time. Till I’ve seen enough to know exactly what I want, and can recognize a good deal. Can’t do too much research. I looked at Trucks for about a year before I knew I’d actually be buying one. Even so, a lot of my practical research went out the window, when I found what I really wanted. Nowadays $60k should get a good Truck. I personally wouldn’t pay any more than that. A $1200-$1500 payment can always be made. Especially when freights down, or for some reason you can’t work. The $2500- $3000 payment 1 Truck operators are headed for trouble. Only a matter of time.

Don’t buy aftermarket warranty of any kind because they are all pretty much worthless. And don’t trust any dealer to “inspect” the emission system. It is 100% on you to inspect any truck you may want and you need to make sure to the best of your ability that it’s a solid truck. That means paying money to have an outside mechanic look at it, paying money to take it someplace and have them hook the computer up to it. Never trust what a dealer tells you. When I bought the truck I have now I knew the previous owner and I knew the salemen at Peterbilt in Missoula and I still paid money to have everything checked out to make sure everyone was telling me the same story.

The new emission standards that used the EGR systems were required in engines manufactured after October 2002. Detroit built so many engines before the deadline that many, if not, most, of the 2003 model trucks had these pre EGR engines.

I can confirm that my 2003 FLD had a pre EGR 12.7 in it. And the truck was built fairly late in the year and still titled as an 03.

From what I've seen of your wish list its always the same basic trucks your looking at and you get the same basic answer from members .. but yet you rebuttal everyones opinions or advice just look at this thread and how everybody has suggested you stay away from these trucks with the emissions problems but yet ..( and rightfully so you feel like you have the answers )
JMO but I think you more Indecisive than my exwife.. trust me thats bad !!

Was there ever a Detroit with 2 egr valves? I recall a Driver telling me his woes with egr, claimed his new Truck has 2 of them. That’s when I first decided to stick with what I had and still have. I think he must have been mistaken. Anyone?
