So I'm starting with a company next week it'll be my first trucking job after getting my CDL. The question is that they have two pay packages. One per diem and one straight pay. The Per Diem has allot more benefits. But I'm not sure what Per-Diem is. Which pay package should I go for
Per Diem
.37CPM
3 weeks paid vacation 1st year. can take it as early as 3 months after starting.
$1,000 sign on bonus paid throughout first year
2000-2400 mile .06CPM performance bonus paid every week
Straight Pay
.44CPM
1 week paid vacation 1st year. can't take it till after your full year.
no sign on bonus
2400-3000 .06CPM performance bonus every week
They seem to giving allot of perks if you take the per diem but is it worth it?
Per Diem question.

It's just an extra 6 cents you get every week if you hustle and run what's stated above. you get 10 cents extra if you run more then what's stated in my original post.

27 cents taxed 10 cents untaxed per diem

It's just an incentive the company has to make you want to run harder. -
BUT, in your first year, your number one goal is to do your record no harm, keep it clean. Your big payday comes in year number two at a different company, if you have a clean record. Double your pay the first year or more.
So, in light of that, I would run as little as possible, take your sweet time. Take number 1 with the per diem. The per diem is just a pretax reimbursement to you, as according to IRS rules. This pay is not taxed or needs to be reported by you.snowez Thanks this. -
Anytime a company (anyone, really) takes something very simple and makes it complicated, the reason is to confuse you into making the best decision FOR THEM.
That pay scheme is nuts. Go find a company that's not into playing payroll games.12 ga, Capacity, Texas_hwy_287 and 9 others Thank this. -
I would opt for per diem pay now that company drivers can no longer claim per diem on their taxes. The savings can be significant.
