I see nothing has changed in the 2 weeks I was off. My first p/u cancelled. So after notifying my DM about the cancellation, I wait, and wait, then wait a little more. Finally, after 2 hours, I sent a QC asking if I should go into LA for the second pick up or call it a day. At this point, I needed fuel and DEF, so I head over the 12 miles to Ontario and fill up the truck, $4.25 on the pump for 137 gallons, then fill up the DEF, hoping like heck the new DEF tank on my new truck isn’t leaking. It’s all good. But still no response from my DM about this load. Finally I call into the load planner directly and ask him what they want me to do. He said to go in and make the second p/u. I bit my tongue, left and here I am in El Segundo getting my 3000 pound half a trailer load going back east. I truly understand why there’s a high turnover in this industry. If I was a new driver, not getting the answers or help I needed, I would get very disillusioned and quit. At least I know who to call and problem solve on the fly. Personally, they could have told me to sit until tomorrow, I have no problem putting in for a day of layover and trying for another day off.

Exactly. The only reason I made it through the time period of not having load planners know my name and face and phone number, was because of a unique set of circumstances and personality traits. I had no dependents or relationships or expenses, I wanted desperately to make the career work solely for the love of the work, and I was able to calm myself down by thinking "just relax. If you didn't have this job, you'd be twiddling your thumbs just the same, only without health insurance."

If I had bills piled up, and family I was being kept away from, and nonzero self-esteem in order to value my time, with the truck sitting still due to office dysfunction? Would have been a different story.

Appreciate the offer, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Load assignment gave me a 24-hour delivery window, but a survey of the delivery location on Google satellite view did not convey the impression that they were a 24-hour operation. So I called 'em and confirmed that, yep, they were only open 8-5. As I wouldn't arrive until well after they'd gone home for the day, and since truck stops are thin on the ground in that part of the world, I called it a day in Barstow and delivered this morning when they opened.

Will put your name in the virtual rolodex should it ever come up again, though. Thanks again!

Sitting here at the HP/Damco warehouse in Santa Fe Springs, middle of LA, waiting on a repair truck to come out and repair the flat tire on the trailer I just picked up here. Hopefully I can get out of here before LA traffic gets super terrible, but I ain't holding my breath. Closest truck stop is the Pilot in Castaic, but that place is #2 on my list of truck stops to never stop at under any circumstances. The Petro in Lebec is 2 hours away, and I'm 3hr 43mins left on my 14 (and it's counting down).

Fortunately, the repair guy just showed up so hopefully I can make it to Lebec before I run out of hours.

Hope you make it to Lebec.

I used to stay at The Country Girl next door to that Pilot in Castaic. No idea if it's still there. I'd get dinner in there to cover the parking fee. Of course that was like ten years ago almost.
