Some brokers are real snakes about this.
Today was the worst I've seen.
400 miles away.
I was assured by the broker that the pickup was "on the way" to the delivery.
One little problem MR broker, if I drive up there, 400 miles away, and it was canceled, your $150 TONU fee isn't even going to cover expenses.
Also thought it was kind of funny they want to pay the rate as if I was only doing the loaded miles, and not coming 400 miles to the pickup. I gave him the $4 a mile total mile price and he hung up on me, LMAO.
Now if this was going to a great area, it might make a bit of sense, but this isn't exactly the busy season for.... upstate NY.

I quote them insanely high just like you did. Or find other ways to waste their time. They don't care about ours so give them a taste of what it's like. TQL does this often in my area.

I know a driver that works for a flatbed company and he does all kinds of runs like that , where they will drive 300 miles empty , load up and drive the load 160 miles and deliver it and drive 485 miles empty back to the yard.
but the company charges out the nose for it.
recently went on a run where they drove 300 miles empty , loaded up, took it 130 miles, delivered it and they are waiting four days at a truck stop near the site, (closest truck stop was 65 miles from the job site) and are going to haul the same cargo 130 miles back to the same place and then drive 300 miles empty back home.
Company is charging an eye watering fee for it, and pays the drivers a good percentage .
Gonna be one of his best weeks pay ever.
If you need an oversize overweight load moved in a hurry , they will scramble trucks to do it , but you’re gonna pay out the nose.
But they don’t ever use brokers, they find these loads themselves. No dirtbag brokers involved .
They will run a thousand miles empty to get to their next load, rather than use a broker . seen em do it.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -

Some will do this around my area. For example they'll list Elmira when it's really syracuse. Or list Binghamton when it's really Scranton or vise versa. I think they do it to confuse other brokers.
