My father was a moonshine runner in his younger days.
My mother put a stop to that after he returned home from WWII.
He had a full time job as a tank mechanic at Ft. Campbell, KY but worked on moonshine runners cars on the weekends and sometimes at night.
They came to him for modifications to the cars and engines.
My mother would look out the kitchen window at his shop and fume for what he was doing.....lol

isn't it true, that moonshiners were the start of the race car (was it stock car, before NASCAR??) craze in later years?

That's true. Junior Johnson is the most famous. Many of those racers ran moonshine also.

One of my friends, that also dated my cousin, ran moonshine on weekends. We were in high school together and he ran moonshine while in high school. He made enough money to buy a brand new Buick; beautiful green & white two-tone color. After high school he was caught robbing a bank and did 5 years in federal prison.
The way he was caught, the teller recognized him, even with a mask. She yelled, "Wayne, what in the world are you doing?"
