    Hi, Pete 579 paccar mx13.
Cooling fan comes on a lot after driving all day. Every time I stop at a light. Temp probably 220. Not sure but over 200. I'll have to go look to be precise .
    That is not so bad. The real annoying things are ;
    1. Extremely loud. Normal sound I think but never heard any fan scream like this one.
    2. When fan comes on it saps horse power. I can't shift. Even reving to 1800 , it drops too fast and have to force into gear.
Normal take off from stop is gone. It's like it loses a lot of hp.
As soon as fan shuts off, truck takes off normally. If in the middle of a shift and it turns off , rpm revs up.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Best is two run two speed fan or electric viscous fan. Here are conditions for fan off/on.
    Conditions for Activation

    • The on/off fan clutch is activated if:
    • The coolant temperature is higher than the programmed coolant temperature of 215ºF, or
    • The boost temperature is higher than the programmed boost temperature, or
    • The power steering fluid temperature is higher than the programmed temperature (only if a power steering cooler is installed), or
    • The engine speed is lower than a programmed speed, and:
    • PTO speed control is active, or
    • The manual fan switch is active, or
    • The A/C high-pressure switch is active, or
    • The high level of the engine brake has been activated.

    Conditions for Deactivation

    • The on/off fan clutch is deactivated if:
    • The engine speed is higher than the programmed speed, or
    • The coolant temperature is lower than the programmed coolant temperature of 200º F, or
    • The boost temperature is lower than the programmed boost temperature, or
    • The power steering fluid temperature is lower than the programmed temperature (only if a power steering cooler is installed), or
    • The engine speed is higher than the programmed speed and:
    • PTO speed control is not active, or
    • The manual fan switch is switched off, or
    • The A/C high-pressure switch is switched off, or
    • The high level of the engine brake is switched off.

Pete and Ken both being made by paccar. My goodness. I noticed they were looking like the same Truck for years now.

I had to move the a/c condenser out of the way, remove the charge air cooler, then hose out the radiator of severe dust buildup to solve my fan coming on way too much.
But I haul grain, that dust gets into everything

I also haul grain. I blow a lot of water in it each week when washing truck . It might need a better cleaning by now.
Doesn't do it until hot part of day 5pm and later after running hard all day. But man is it loud.

    Team818 Thanks this.

Might need to change the bearings in the fan clutch

Sounds like too much resistance if you can't shift while it's activated
