I would also take some of the horror stories you've heard with a grain of salt. ABF was terrible to work for; UPS, while still strenuous, is a vacation in comparison.

It is extremely unlikely anyone with zero tractor trailer driving (school doesn’t count) will get hired at UPS. It is possible but not probable. My former codrivers nephew got hired fresh out of school but I wouldn’t count on that happening without some strings being pulled for you. I do recommend you try but don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t happen right away.
If I were you I would try for a job like Yellow or ABF and then hope to get in UPS later when you have some experience.
I fully realize the world of trucking has changed since I was hired at UPS in 2002, but the hiring manager told me I was the least experienced driver she had ever hired. I had 15 years and well over a million miles at the time.

I am a feeder driver for UPS and I can tell you this. You are going to be in progression and it is 4 years to top rate. You no different than anyone else who has gone brought that. Its contractual between the union and the company. So my advice to you is look at the long term as far as wages and you will be fine. But remember you are as green as the grass with no doubles experience, no city experience, no yard time, and no road time. So yes your going to start at the bottom and work your way up. Like all the rest of us have done it. And another thing I didn't mention is you are going to be On Call for a while. When you get more seniority then you can bid on more steadier work.

It’s not pretty in the beginning. There’s no sugarcoating that. But I will never willingly leave this job, provided it stays the way it is now.

My Bosses boss told him to tell me I couldn’t leave unless I retired or got fired! You ain’t kidding about it being rough in the beginning. At least you were probably used to running at night at ABF. I went from day work the prior 15 years to a start time roughly 10 at night on usually 11-12 hours jobs. Talk about culture shock.

Well, it just like I'd suspected. My CDL instructor has good intentions; but my gut told me that he might only have a part of the story. From his point of view, he made it seem as though that the union at UPS was making an exception, due to the driver shortage. From what he'd told me, the hub in Oak Creek WI, was snapping up new CDL grads as feeder drivers and starting them out at $38/hr....I know wishful thinking; but that's all the more reason why I'd decide to post this question to the forum. Either way, I was attempting to get confirmation on whether this was true or not.

In closing, I would just have to start at the bottom like everyone else.

Oh, that was the question? There was no way in hell you were going to start out at scale. I thought you meant would they take you at all.

the toronto canada hub in concord is looking for feeder drivers but starting wage of $19 a hr no way in hell i could afford to start at that rate . i can’t believe being so close to toronto where if you’re not making at least $25 a hr you can’t afford to live there the rate would be so low . i have 13 years experience and thought of applying and understand i wouldn’t be making top wages but with all the other bs i read or have heard . ei being let go right before probation , on call never knowing when or how many shifts you will get how can anyone afford to stay at ups unless you have a part time job or live off the wife’s income. i guess for now i will just stay at my local mega job making $23 a hr ot of $34.50 after 9 hrs . works out to be $25.09 a hr for 11 hrs work
