If hauling fuel interests you, and you get an opportunity to hire on fresh out of school, DO IT!

People who don't know what they're talking about always throw out that "rolling bomb" malarkey.

    YES, your cargo is flammable.

YES, it needs to be handled with respect.

YES, a gas tanker has to be driven with more attention to detail.

NO, it does not catch fire if you look at it.

BUT, no company will cut you loose until you are fully ready.

These days, it can take a couple months to get all your loading cards. Used to be your trainer would tell the rack operator, "yeah, the kid's got it down", and they'd give you your card. Now, most places want to watch you do THREE loadouts with no prompting from your trainer.

Again, give it a try. If it's not for you, they'll probably know before you will.

    Good luck.

Go for the Dixon Bros. tankers.
Some people even say you shouldn't pull reefers until you get a year or so experience pulling dry van. Not true, that's throwing money away.
Since you can start out on top, don't throw away the chance with tankers.

Any truck can be a bomb if the driver is careless.

Dairy Farmers of America used to run ads for new cdl grads from Sage CDL School only.
Had to have a year experience or graduate from Sage.
That policy may have changed though. Haven't seen those ads in a long time.

Thank you very much. He talked to me about getting loading cards...I guess some places are written test, some you watch videos, some they want to see you load.

That's how I'm feeling. Probably shouldn't throw away this opportunity. Don't want to sell myself short and get stuck in something that won't give me as valuable of an experience.

I saw an ad for them recently, but of course they wanted 2+ years of experience. I'll still look into them and see what I can find. Can't hurt to reach out to them.

If you can get the proper training then yea I’d absolutely go and haul fuel. I don’t know the going rate for where your at but up here in mich companies are hiring in at 27-34 an hour. Once you get a feel for the truck and get good at the job the city is like your playground… I can go and get lunch wherever I can park the truck I say don’t do anything but drive to gas stations to play the lottery all night

It sounds like they would do some pretty thorough training, so I'm not too concerned about that. Pay rate is probably pretty similar to where you're at. I was told the guy who started from my school started in that range and already got a pay raise (he started in July).
