Hi,
This would seem like a question that would have about a hundred different threads, but couldn't seem to find too much. We are looking at purchasing a used 2020 T880, 510 HP MX-13, daycab, 18 speed Eaton Ultrashift MXP, for gravel hauling.
My question is on that transmission. We have an 2012 386 with the 13 speed Ultrashift, driver likes it, but personally I hate it. Any small movement jerks a guy around and it looks like first day of driving again. Downshifting is not aggressive at all. Found we are best off putting it into Low when starting to slow, so that it is functional on the downshift. Also has given other issues, but could be due to the fact it came from Ontario, is pretty rusty truck.
Are the MXP's any better control wise? I imagine they have fans and haters too. We have Allison 6 speeds in our mixer trucks, absolutely love those auto's.
Thanks.
Another Auto Transmission Thread. 18spd Eaton Ultrashift MXP?

The USP 13 and 18 sp are virtually identical. Same controls and the whole 9. My advise would be to get Service Ranger hooked up to the truck and go for a ride with a load on it. Have the shift settings changed to your drivers preferences. Theres alot you can change in there, and the incorrect settings will make it absolute garbage to drive.
Keep the clutch greased with the recommended lube and the trans software up to date.rosnorter, Magoo1968, Accidental Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
My advice, is to go road test something with an Allison RDS 4500, or 4700. One is a 6 speed, the other is a 7 speed automatic with a torque converter.
BUT, since it's a used truck you're looking at, most of it is in the shift settings. Eaton did come out with a newer transmission to compete with the Volvo I-Shift and Detroit DT12...If the settings on the Eaton are set to economy, it is miserable to drive.rosnorter Thanks this. -

I dont know a way around the subscription.
The biggest changer will be your vocational shift response.
Economy, moderate and fast
Economy is a dog and is really slow in traffic stop and go, switch to fast. Long haul can get by with moderate and is much less harsh if your not in a hurry.rosnorter Thanks this.
