Kinda like slow motion.. Old Doctor came down US49 from Doddsville. Came upon a state truck crew doing the tar refill in the concrete joints like back then. Dump truck pulling an air compressor,and tar kettle. Two men working, one manning the scraper removing tar and other dribbling in new tar.
Me meeting; F700 straight truck with elec plug in reefer in under left front side of box. In my lane as he careens out, knocking the man with tar bucket into the air compressor. Me gone for shoulder so he centers and kills the scraper man and cleanly removes the reefer unit from 2 feet below and behind my butt.
This was in 1954 and he was driving a Packard sedan. Hot car in those days and he had it wound coming in.
You are driving along, see the work situation, then its like watching a kaleidoscope and it is over. Reposition and start picking up pieces.
First and only "body bag" I was near. Took 4 or 5 of us to pick him up. So broken up it was like trying to manhandle a big log chain, limber.

Re election time. Sheriffs' get strict.....Down here normally just take his whiskey, fine him all he can stand, chastise ref the crime, and share the whiskey with the law enforcement community.. Deputies, Justice judges, other good ole boys who can turn a favor or a few votes. Some folks have large families, larger bunch of in laws and "real good neighbors", so can easily campaign year round.
