We had 5 water wells in a row ranging from 100 to 150 feet apart. Each well had water at a different depth, and some was hard while the other well had soft water.
The one thing they had in common though was, none had a whole lot of water.
I was allowed 3” of water in the tub to bath in, and clothes had to be kept clean as possible.
We had an old wringer washer out in the utility room with the wood stove and sucker rod pump. Many times our clothes were washed in rain water from the barrel at the corner of the house.
I doubt kids today could live a month the way many of us lived our whole life….. -

3 different trucks actually. 1 truck we bought together, I kept the steering wheel, shifter, and flat top bunk with T handle side doors. He needed the radiator, power steering, and the cab with O/O gauge package…..

My grandmother on my father's side, Violet, was a sweet old gal.
But I hated taking baths at her house because she also would only let me put a couple of inches of lukewarm water in the tub... same reason, anything more was a waste and baths were for getting clean and not playing in. Was definitely a product of her generation (was born in 1912 or so). An excellent cook, could make clothes out of anything and maintained an impeccable household. Was quite the spitfire.
She lived in the same house from the late 1930's until she died in 2005, on what I knew as our 12 acre almond orchard which was the remnants of a much larger farm and dairy. Anyway, just after I graduated from high school I moved into the little apartment that was built into the detached garage. The free housing while I made an attempt to continue my education at Modesto Junior College.
My dad and uncle were telling her that she was not to do things like cook dinner for me or provide anything. "He's not here for you to care for, leave him alone"
Her response was fantastic.
"Listen, if I want to cook a meal for my grandson I'll do exactly that. I'm not going to let you two idiots tell me what to do so shut up"Nostalgic, singlescrewshaker, dwells40 and 15 others Thank this. -
You guys brought up clothes. I never owned a new anything until high school. My grandma would drag me to garage sales all over town. Then she would repair socks when they were worn or she would use iron on patches from the dime store. Alot of kids made fun of me for alot of years. Not a one of those patches came close to matching anything it was ironed to.
