Heck I grew up dad and his buddies were union teamster owner ops. Had a equipment lease. Driver was paid a check with driver wages, taxed, insurance options. Then a check for equipment.

A employee of a owner op. Was not screwed by truck owner. He got his check from Carrier. Truck owner got equipment usage payment.

    Owner/Driver got both checks.

Isn't that something! Some years I know of company guys that take home more than I gross as a OP. But I chose when and how I work. Sick kid, I can stay home. Wanna work on truck, I stay home, weather is bad. I can stay home. No one but my banker to dictate how I should work. I'm about bout to divorce the bank in a few years.

With regard to "1099" it's the parlance. When most people hear the term 1099 driver they are thinking about a driver driving someone else's truck. Yes, this is how most if not all OOs get paid. This is confusing for some folks. It's also not a major point!

Very good point @Moose1958. 1099 is an IRS form. Just as a W2 is an IRS Form. Nothing wrong with either. I worked construction for almost 3 decades. Received MULTIPLE 1099's from many customers in January. I was a SUBCONTRACTOR. (or Independent Contractor if you prefer( I supplied Materials, labor, equipment, etc. I had a Contract specifying the above items. I worked for many Landlords and Property Management Companies. They did not have a full time staff of plumbers, electricians, roofers etc. They paid me an agreed on price..... Hourly or Bid. They were required by law to report the money they paid me to be reported to the IRS. ( over $600.00 per calendar year) The big problem in the Trucking Industry, is there are unscrupulous Companies that put a driver in a Company Owned Truck, Company Paid Fuel, Company Paid Repairs, COMPANY EVERYTHING........ BUT...... skirt unemployment insurance, workers comp insurance, payroll taxes.... (Social Security and Medicare taxes), for those of you unfamiliar with the term. THAT IS ILLEGAL!!! Leasing your own equipment on to a Company for a CONTRACTED reimbursement is perfectly Legal and common in this industry.
