Ok, as previously suggested I skint back the wire that goes from coolant sensor to coolant gauge and as suggested it seems to be a fat copper wire, which may in fact be a, “has filled tube”. From the skint spot I went to ground with no movement at the gauge, with the key in the, “on” position. If this is or sounds like the gas filled style, can I switch it to another style? Would it be better to call Cat with engine # or Pete with VIN#?

Mine says made in May of ‘87. VIN 1XP5DB9X7HD216971. Which ever style is compatible to change to and most accurate.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Installing a new mechanical gauge assy is probably the easiest and most cost effective choice. They can be had at most every local auto parts store. Repairing back to factory electrical sender and gauge will surely be more challenging and costly. Pete parts always has issues looking up senders anyhow. Gauge vs hot water light, some had both senders.

Do the later model 3406B’s have the mechanical sender and gauge?
Oxbow Thanks this. -
I have had Pete give me the wrong sender according to VIN as you say.mile marker 27, Goodysnap and wore out Thank this. -
Stewart Warner has some really good looking gauges that fit the factory holes. Our local parts store keeps some in stock. As @Goodysnap said that’s the easiest solution
