I truly don't know, but if you got stranded for let's say 24 hours in a brand new electric car fully charged, how long would the battery last if you used the heater. Or would a heater even work if it wasn't moving?

 

To throw some numbers at it. Smallest pack in a Tesla model 3 is 55 Kilowatt hours.

Small space heaters are 1 kilowatt (1000 watt) usage.

A small pack Tesla should be able to run one of those + a small recirculate fan for the 24 hours. Hopefully they have something like that built in for starting out but before the pack coolant comes up to temp. May be something the Feds need to require, as a cover for stupid people.

The new Ford truck: one of things they show in the promotions is being able to run the house for a few hours if the power utility fails.

In the future, for cases like this storm, what I see more probable happening is a Nanny bot effect. Somebody in local DOT (Cue the maniacal evil villain laugh) pushes a button and all the self driving cars migrate to the next available off ramp. And all the self driving cars in town refuse to enter the highway. Effectively shutting down the road.

Of course my mental movie is of a Karen type in a foot stomping temper tantrum cause the car wont take her to the mall, and falls on her backside in the ice.
