If it takes you 3 hours or more to do that, you're slacking.

Take it how you will, but that headset ain’t gonna watch you do it till you get it right. Training in a classroom or online setting can be useful, I have had my share of that. However nothing replaces hands on experience or coaching. I never said the headset made it so a trained monkey could do it. The work order handed to you should let you know of any campaigns on ECM, or PIP campaigns. Yes the steps vary from truck to truck but if the head set reminds you of that are you ready to be solo yet? When doing work for the public the tech needs to be confident he knows the steps. My truck is my livelihood minor hiccups no big deal. Till a minor detail becomes major.

To be clear I never meant to imply your anything other than an apprentice.....that’s where we all start. I just meant to say that under the watchful eye of a lead man is better. Reducing down time is the name of the game even if it’s at the expense of a little extra down time on PM’s. If your gonna make it in a truck shop you better learn to thick skinned or it’s a miserable long ride.

I tell you what come show me just exactly how good you are.......I get it you gotta stand your ground. Itemize the time on all that. Tell me would you check your kingpins for slack before greasing them or after since you got it jacked up or do you wait for tire wear?

Time spent is minuscule to a job done correctly. I pay for quality not quantity. Being frugal cost money. Stepping over dollars to pick up dimes cost money. I don’t do mine myself to save a friggin dime. It’s to insure it’s done right.

Where did I say anything about 3 hours. I said I can’t do it in 1 hour.

Varies 2.5 anyway. I’m sure some days is 3.5 depending on how good a day I have had. Little tinkering crap I see along the way that I take care of etc. how long should that entire list along with sweeping up etc when done take?

Who gives a flying fart how long it takes the man. If it takes him 3 hours he's probably being pretty meticulous.
I'm about the same as wore out. Can change the oil in a hurry if needed and be back rolling in 45 minutes. But if I'm not in a hurry I'm gonna spend some time on my back looking the truck and trailer over real good.

Not sure why you mentioned thick skinned I was just applauding your criticism. Netherless as far as the headset issue goes its company policy to use it whether you've been here 20 years or 1 month. Company's way of showing consistency. But I understand your concern and skepticism. Other than what I've already said I can't provide any more useful (potential) info for the thread. But yes I also agree ojt can't be replaced as means of training. The online vids are nice tho.

That sounds about right. No reason these, "oil change" shops can't do the same thing. Two hours shop time/labor plus oil/filters/grease for pretty much what they charge now. They're making out like bandits for simply changing oil and filters but the truck owner is getting short changed in the PM part of the job. They have ZERO need to sell any accessorial type work as they're already getting at least two hours shop time from the customer for nothing.

It’s hard to understand something you’ve never used. Poor judgment on my part. You do seem to have pride in doing the job correctly. That and time you’ll make it. Good luck to you
