Well, I disagree. You think they are stupid because you wrongfully assume that they have your best interests in mind. They don't and that's been proven time and time again. So I'm not going to beat that dead horse. I fully believe that there is fast coming a day when we will all have to make some very tough choices. Personally, I'm just hoping to get everything I can in order by then and try to beat the clock. I'm lost, so I'm just doing the best I can to set my family up the best I possibly can.

You're wrong in assuming I assume anything.

And yes, they are stupid. It doesn't matter how big, or elaborate a house is, if it is built on sand, then the builder is a fool.

Had a discussion with a person that seams normally intelligent yet assured me Tesla and Elon Musk has received Zero government grants, loans, assistance. Elon is so intelligent he did it all by himself.

Tesla is built on sand. But might make it.

Just recall Henry Ford was a big failure a few times. Even after he was established, he almost took FordMoCo down a few times.

I know your not that guy. I know that you and i think more alike than not on most issues. I was just making a point. In the end though.....I just dunno. You know the old saying about weak men and hard times, strong men and good times.....etc. well, we are surrounded by willful weakness. The times are changing because alot of folks want it too. Alot of folks like the idea of getting paid to stay home.......and that is what scares me. Somebody has to support them. Because of that, I am making real strides to knock our standard of living down......like alot. Because eventually the burden becomes too great. I already pay more in taxes than the average American makes in a year. How much more of that burden do I want to shoulder?

Speaking of taxes, have y’all seen the commercials for Obama care? Got people on their saying “yeah, I only pay 70 a year, I pay 43 a year and then I pay 0 a year”. Yeah people, y’all don’t pay squat, but my taxes and those on here pay for that health coverage. Christ on a crutch.

This is a topic I have ruminated upon over many long miles traveling where radios do not reliably reach.
By combining a couple differing technologies it could be a winner.
A smaller diesel engine powering a generator at peak efficiency with it charging a battery pack and powering the tractive motor. Then when you need extra power for hill climbing or acceleration you can tap into the battery pack. you can also use regenerative charging like a "jake brake" to slow. If the batteries are topped then the extra regenerative energy can be expended with a resistive load.
all these technologies are in use today in different industries but to my knowledge not all together in one place and to the scale of a unit to carry a 20 ton load over a long distance on existing roads.
Railroads of course use diesel-electric with traction motors on more than one axle to spread the load and some have used regenerative braking dumped into a resistive load, but they do not use batteries to add power when extra is needed and instead move out of the efficiency range of the engine. Regenerative braking/charging is used by Tesla and others to some degree and can improve range/efficiency by as much as 35%(claimed). Also some hybrid vehicles do use the "supplement the engine with batteries" systems in various forms.

There’s a Group of guys in BC starting a diesel electric truck company. They are prototyping with a 1963 KW. They are hoping to make retrofit kits for older trucks. Pretty interesting.

That would be a good idea for someone to try.

Only issue i can think of.... the traction motors would have to be placed on the drive axles, and they're fairly heavy. On a train they run around 14,000 lbs, so a smaller version for a truck maybe 8,000 lbs. So that's 16,000 lbs on the drives with just the motors, at least.

What would be cool though, is that by adding an axle, not only would payload be increased, but hp could be increased as well by adding an additional motor.
