Jim..I hope you make the right choice. You need this to work out for you and you deserve to have some luck here.
I think my only advice is that whatever you decide to do, try to stick with them for 1yr and then jump ship if you need to.
I think if you leave before 1yr is up, it is trucking suicide.
Once this economy picks up (whenever the #### that will be) we will have more choices and if companies want to retain drivers they need to start treating them like the professionals they are...well, at least SHOULD BE...

Well one week to go. I have been so impressed with the school. They really are going out of the way to make sure that you know what you need to not only pass the cdl, but be able to function as a professional truck driver.
Have driven twice now. Still have an issue from time to time putting the clutch too far in, but I will get the hang of it!
Will be testing on the 31st!The Challenger Thanks this. -
Jim, have you decided on werner or prime yet?
Just please dont go to the independant contractor programs with either company. You won't be happy.
And if you go to prime, be careful, because i know they have a setup where they can team/train company drivers with owner operators, and owner operators do not go home much at prime, at all.I talked to several ownerops over there and they all told me they cant go home more than a weekend every 2 months or so because they cant afford their truck payment if they do. And i asked how they could live like that, "YOU DONT UNDERSTAND OWNER OPERATORS!" lol.
Anyway, prime is probably not such a bad place if you stay company driver. I dont remember if i told you, but if i recall correctly, there training program lasts for quite a few more hours than werner. And there's a good chance that you are going to have problems with your trainer, at either company, and at some point want off his truck, but, as long as you remember that switching trainers will add several days to your training, that once youre out of training its all over and you dont have to deal with anyone in your truck anymore, and that the next trainer is probably even more of a jerk, and that it IS your trainers truck, and that you need to respect him and listen to him.....From what you've said when i've talked to you, you sound like you'll do just fine though!
HANDARKO! Yes, leaving before 1 year is trucking suicide, and I commited it. Next thing I knew, i was homeless, sleeping in my car, abandoned by most of my family, abused, soon had a warrant for my arrest because someone filed a 100% false police report on me, and guess who the police believed? I hate cops! oh and they basically judged me because i had left the scene before the police arrived, BECAUSE I WAS IN FEAR OF MY LIFE, unemployed but had a few jobs making nowhere near enough to pay rent, ....and then finally i got on with werner, but I almost gave up looking for a trucking job because i thought i was done. I live in michigan by the way.... -
Well last week I messed up on my parallel parking skill test. I could have probably figured it out but since there are only three people in the class behind me, I decided I would come back for another week of training.
It has been great. At times I had a truck all to myself to work on the different skills.
Also have been going out driving every day.
Roadmaster has been fantastic. I can not imagine a better learning environment.
All of the instructors have really done their best to impart their knowledge into me.
We are supposed to get 5 inches of snow today, so the test tomorrow should be fun.
Hopefully I wll not have a brain fart and run over a curb or anything like that.
But If I do, I will be back again for more time in the truck.
I will get this cdl!
Later!

Jim,
What did you get parallel right or left?

Hey Jim, If you have a trainer or examiner named Paul W. (he'll be the ugliest one there) tell him Biscuit says hi. He used to be my dispatcher back years ago down in Circleville.
Also, when your on the road running around town watch out for all the gas tankers up and down Wilson and Fisher Roads. We gotta go!! Rookie!JimTheHut Thanks this. -
Blind side to the right. I have it down now. I am glad I got the extra week of practice. I am looking beyond just getting my cdl. The more practice I get, the better I will be!The Challenger Thanks this. -
There are two Paul's. One is a very big person and the other one is not!
Which one is he? -
He would probably be the bigger guy. Last I saw him he was scruffy. Paul Webber.
-
He said he thinks he remembers you!
Well I passed everything today and am on my way!
It was way more challenging than I thought it would be!
I am glad I am finished with that Phase!
