Because frankly it’s mind blowing that someone with your experience has been asking these kinds of questions.
When you have weight on your bags the air system is pumping air to the bags to keep your truck at ride height. When you remove the weight (in this case your trailer) the air is still going to the bags to keep it at ride height only now you’ve removed the weight within a couple seconds. And that causes the bags to extend because the leveling valve can’t exhaust the air that quickly when it’s trying to get the truck back down to ride height.

Since my trucking school never taught this, and my trainer did not teach me, and my teammates didn't do it, how the heck was I supposed to know about dumping the air bags?
Since I was never a diesel mechanic, how was I supposed to know about the leveling valve and how the air bags work? -

Learning as much as you can about the truck will benefit you. Simply being able to describe what is wrong when you have a problem will save you time and make your life easier.

Until about a year ago, I didn't know that I needed to dump the air out of the air bags when I slide the fifth wheel. So whenever I slid the fifth wheel before a year ago, it was a very violent process, sometimes some of my property would fall off my shelves in my truck. But about a year ago, I called breakdown to get them to walk me through the process in case I was doing something wrong. The guy at breakdown was making sure I was doing everything correctly. He asked me if I had extended my landing gear so that the air left the air bags. I didn't know what he was talking about at the time. So he told me I needed to get the air out of the air bags by extending the landing gear farther even after the feet of the landing gear hit the ground, or, if I had a "suspension dump" button, I could use that. Ever since then, I have been able to slide the fifth wheel a lot smoother and with more precision.Last edited: Jan 30, 2022
