I have my B class license. Can I take the combination written test in Pa and hold off until I’m ready to take the road test for the A? Thank you for your time.

In my state of TN the Commercial Lerner's Permit of CLP expires after 180 days. I think as long as both computer tests are completed while you have the same CLP, it would count. Don't forget to complete the pre-trip and road test, if there is one required, in the same 180 period. I would call your states DMV, whatever they call it, and ask them 1) how long is a CLP valid, and 2) if all computer tests have to be completed at same time or just on same CLP?

Oh yeah, to get the A license you need to complete General, Combination, and Air-Brakes. I'd strongly recommend you also complete Tanker endorsement. There is a lot of freight that goes inside van, reefer, or on flatbed, that requires a Tanker endorsement. For example, if a customer ships several plastic totes of liquid, those require a Tanker endorsement. The rules changed on Tanker back in 2012. Before then you only needed Tanker to pull a tanker trailer, like a fuel tanker. Now Tanker is required for other freight inside van, reefer, flatbed. Tanker endorsement never expires and you never have to retest to keep it.
