So I’m doing a single turbo kit for my c-15 that had a platinum rebuild about 300,000 ago and the head cracked on me. I’m trying to decide if I should just run the original acert 18:1 pistons (they are still in good shape) with the actuators turned off or, switch to a stock c-15 bore 16:1 piston or what I would like to do is run the c-17 kit that IPD makes. My question Is does anyone have any experience with the c-17 kit as far as reliability is concerned.
for the 18:1 pistons I’m just concerned I’ll have head gasket problems down the road with the actuators turned off but on a side note I’m going to run a fire ringed head and ARP head studs on the motor so could that be enough clamping force to overcome the cylinder pressure.
C-17 kit

Unless you want to make big power just go with the 16:1. And you could still make 700 easy.
18:1 with no actuators some say head gasket will live if you drive it right, never lug it.dirthaller, Bean Jr. and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
Pretty mixed bag of opinions..

18:1 turned up isn't gonna last long. Save yourself peace of mind and go 16:1
Like @lester said if you go with 18:1 don't lug it. Even with studs that's a ton of cylinder pressure, asking for trouble down the road -
There’s a thread on here of a member (@Superhauler) I believe, that was about having the head machine with rings or something for his Accert. It eliminated the head gaskets issue for high compression pistons. Maybe some others can chime in on that. Btw, haven’t seen Superhauler on here for awhile.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
black_dog106, Bean Jr., Diesel Dave and 2 others Thank this.

18:1 you need the actuators….. if you want to get rid of them go with the 16:1 pistons
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
You’ll be fine. Leave it the way it is. Look up Adepe Ape on you tube. Points out what @lester is talking about with counterbore cuts and stainless shims. Use a Genuine Cat head gasket, make sure liner protrusion is within a half a thousandth all the way across the deck around 5 thousandths (IIRC), which is easy to obtain with the Cat recommended counterbore/stainless shims. Use the Cat water jacket sleeves. Make sure your spacer plate is perfect. Make sure your ECM isn’t tuned improperly (injection timing…not sloppy fuel) and keep an eye on your water temp. Lower compression pistons might give you a little more longevity and a little less heat if you’re pulling heavy steep grades.
